On April 1, Levi & I were treated to a night at the Mountain View Hotel, a historic establishment in Centennial, just about 30 miles west of Laramie on US Highway 130. Due to our crazy lifestyle with our businesses, we weren’t able to make it until later that Friday evening. However, the owners, Kat & Mike, were kind to us and showed us around, regardless of the hour – part of that Wyoming hospitality that they literally offer around the clock.
Fine hospitality at the Mountain View Hotel isn’t a new phenomenon, but it is something Kat & Mike are proud to continue. Opened in time for the June 4, 1907 arrival of the Laramie Plains, Hahn’s Peak Railroad opening, the establishment was dedicated in a “golden spike” ceremony. Painted white with black trim and built at a cost of $8,000 at the time, it boasted 20 guest rooms, a dining room and a “most improved system of plumbing” – never mind that the bathrooms ended up in the stables. Today, you can find the historic register books and china in the nearby Nici Self Museum.
The hotel has received a lovely face lift by Kat & Mike, and its rooms and suites include a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, coffee roaster and espresso bar. Kat & Mike showed us the suites that make a great stay for a small group, and work well for snowmobilers, hunters, summer vacationers… We discussed how the hotel also makes a great stay for wedding parties getting married in the Snowies – many groups rent the entire hotel for their wedding party to enjoy historic accommodations prior to the big day.
Our room was the Mountain Sage Room, a comfy space with two queen beds and a beautiful en suite bathroom. I had to grab many pictures of the eye-catching antiqued ceiling. We settled in with snacks and a late night Myth Busters marathon, and ended the night soaking in the peaceful silence that I remembered from nighttimes of living in the Snowies as a kid.
In the morning, the room had a lovely sunlight glow and still remained peacefully quiet. I prefer to wake up to a good book, especially on the weekends, so I grabbed my Doris Kearns Goodwin The Bully Pulpit (a great read if you like presidential – or just Victorian – history like I do!) and waited for Levi to wake up. Meandering downstairs, the smell of freshly roasted coffee greeted us and Levi, our family java hound, made a beeline for the espresso bar while I thanked Kat for a great & peaceful night’s stay. Families of snowmobilers were enjoying breakfast in the quaint restaurant, and since we had to rush back as we had a full day of parties with our Laramie bounce house business, I eyed their plates greedily and noticed everyone was having a good meal. There were lots of options for Levi when it came to his coffee, and he went for black with a little extra milk to go. The early spring sunshine was bright and there were still hints of snow – winter season adventure may have been winding down, but you wouldn’t have known it to see the cars with skis and snowmobiles go swishing by through Centennial on their way to the Snowies and Snowy Range Ski Area.
If you’re heading to Laramie or Saratoga to partake in the beauty of the Snowies or enjoy Laramie Jubilee Days, you must make a stay at Mountain View Hotel high on your priority list. After all, if you’re right there and adventuring, you’ll want to fall into a comfy bed that’s nearby and enjoy fresh Joe in the morning. Why not do all that with a little history besides? And when you’re there, be sure to take the hop, skip and jump across the highway to the Nici Self Museum and learn the history of the area. The Pinedale Fine Arts Council is proud to present the seventh annual Sound Check Mini-Music Festival on Saturday, June 28 at 5 p.m. at American Legion Park in Pinedale, WY. The event is free to attend so dust off that cooler, grab your camp chair and head to Pinedale for an evening of amazing music!
Headlining this year’s Soundcheck will be Portland, OR singer/songwriter Laura Gibson. Gibson currently records for the independent U.S. label Hush Records. In 2008, she toured the United States as the opening act for Colin Meloy of the Decemberists. Since the release of 2009’s Beasts of Season, which NPR called “nothing short of a masterpiece” and Mojo called “both quietly devastating and life-affirming”, Gibson has seen her career swell to include everything from modeling in a Japanese fashion magazine, to receiving a standing ovation from an auditorium full of prison inmates.
Playing the Soundcheck middle slot this year is Olympia, WA/Minneapolis, MN duo The Lowest Pair. The Lowest Pair is a quirky, old-time roots influenced duet, featuring the high lonesome harmonies of banjo pickin’ songsters Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee. They perform both traditional and original music, often nestling-in somewhere between. With their city folk front and back porch sentiment, this new, sweet, and powerful duo are turning heads across the country.
Opening the 7th annual Soundcheck will be Austin, TX duo Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay. Leigh and McKay craft story songs with equal measures heart and humor. “Before the World Was Made,” the Austin-based songwriters debut collaboration spotlights the celebrated troubadours in peak form via modern day country duets a la George Jones and Melba Montgomery but with very sophisticated songwriting.
Following this year’s Soundcheck will be an official after party at Rock Rabbit featuring Austin, TX trio Loves It! Born in Austin, Texas in 2010, Loves It is the duo comprised of songwriters of Vaughn Walters and Jenny Parrott that has already played hundreds of shows in the US, Europe and Asia in that short time. The harmony driven pair often switches between guitars, fiddle, and banjo, adding special guests to create a bigger sound, and playing with a veneration for tradition, and a determination to bring a modern voice to their favorite folk, country, gospel and punk sounds.
The annual Soundcheck Fest was first conceived 7 years ago by the Pinedale Fine Arts Council as a means of testing a new sound system they purchased with grant money from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund. The Town of Pinedale and the Sublette County Recreation Board helped support this event.

The 120th Pioneer Days Rodeo, The World’s Oldest Paid Rodeo is July 3rd and 4th in Lander, Wyoming at the Lander Rodeo Grounds. It has western action and excitement for everyone!
The rodeo events (6:30 p.m.) include saddle bronc, Jr. bull riding, bareback riding, barrels, steer wrestling, ultimate miniature bull riding, team roping, and much more!
On both evenings, the Indian relay is a fast and entertaining race. Native American riders ride bareback around the track exchanging horses after each lap.
Pre-sale tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for kids (6-12). At the gate tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids. Call the Lander Chamber of Commerce – 307-332-3892 for tickets. On July 4th stay for the festive fireworks after the rodeo at dusk.
Start July 4th at the Lander Senior Center for the Pancake Breakfast 7-9 a.m. $5, 205 South 10th Street. The July 4th Pioneer Days Parade is a favorite and starts at 10 a.m. on Main Street, Lander. This is the World’s Oldest Historical Pageant Parade. The parade starts with the Annual Lander Half Marathon, walkers 6 a.m., runners 6:30 a.m. After the parade, head on down to Lander City Park for the annual buffalo BBQ 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tickets ($7) are usually sold during the parade or purchase tickets at the Lander Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $8 at the door.

MISS RODEO WYOMING 2012 PAGEANT RESULTS
Kimberly Kuhn, Miss Sheridan-WYO of Laramie, took home the honors of Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2012. The Miss Rodeo Wyoming pageant was held in Douglas, WY August 16-20, 2011 during the Wyoming State Fair. There were 4 young women vying for the title of Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2012 from across the sate. Contestants included Desiree Bridges, Miss Teton County Fair and Rodeo from Jackson; Holly Kennedy, Miss Laramie Jubilee from Laramie; and Bailie Allshouse, Miss Cody Stampede of Cody. The contestants were judged by a panel of three highly qualified judges including Kent Sturman of Thornton, CO; Johna Niedfelt of Grand Island, NE; and Judy Rogers from Scottsbluff, NE.
Brittany Richards, Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011, was on hand for the awards ceremony. The Wyoming State Fair Director, James Goodrich, and Wyoming Director of Ag, Jason Fearneyhough, presented the saddle to Kimberly. Kimberly took home the categories of personality and appearance. She also won the sales achievement award, knowledge award, photogenic award, and the speech award.
The first runner-up went to Holly Kennedy, Miss Laramie Jubilee of Laramie. Holly won the horsemanship category and the most ads sold at Wyoming State Fair award. The second runner-up went to Desiree Bridges, Miss Teton County Fair & Rodeo of Jackson.
Bailie Allshouse, Miss Cody Stampede from Cody won the awards of congeniality and scrapbook.
Kimberly Kuhn is the daughter of Pete and Vickie and calls Laramie home. A fifth generation ranch owner in Johnson and Sheridan counties and the Big Horn Mountains, Kimberly has been blessed to be raised a Wyoming cowgirl. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming in Agriculture Business with a minor in finance. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, SPURS Honorary, Ag Ambassadors, UW Rodeo Team and was a recipient of the National Western Stock Show Scholarship. Kim is a member of Wyoming Rodeo Association, Mile-Hi Barrel Racing Association, Cowgirls of the West, and Big Horn Basque Club. She was honored to serve Cheyenne Frontier Days as Miss Frontier 2009, and was a leader of the CFD Dandies.
Kim has earned her Gold Congressional Award and was commencement speaker at her high school graduation. She worked as a Student Page for the 59th Legislative Session and earned the Y.E.S. Award. Kimberly held many leadership positions in FFA, DECA and was a Varsity member of the Golf and Dance teams. She was also awarded the FFA Area Star in Agricultural Placement Award. She enjoys breakaway roping, running barrels, singing, golfing and spending time with her family.
