Clay Paper Scissors Gallery in Cheyenne has a beautiful new location! 1513 Carey Avenue

Clay Paper Scissors Gallery & Studio was started in 2009 in Cheyenne by Mark Vinich and Camellia El-Antably in the historic Asher Building. “In 2012, we purchased a small unloved building on Carey to renovate,” Camellia says. “Built in the late 1800s, we saw potential in the graceful space and brick walls to be a beautiful gallery addition to Cheyenne. We worked with Tobin & Associates and J.L. Everitt Construction to renovate the building into an open airy space that both honors its history and adds contemporary touches.”

Clay Paper Scissors offers studio space for artists (currently three: Mark, Camellia and Eric Lee) and a gallery that shows a range of work as wide as Wyoming’s open spaces. “We show primarily Wyoming artists from around the state,” Camellia adds.

The duo are heavily involved in the arts in Wyoming. Mark is a Lander native and Cheyenne art teacher; Camellia moved here in 2001 to work for the Wyoming Arts Council. Clay Paper Scissors grew out of their interest in having communal space for art creation, and a desire to show work not seen in local galleries. “We show artwork we want to see — work being done by artists living and working currently that appeals to the mind, the senses and the heart,” Camellia says. “Wyoming is very eclectic in its taste in art and the artists who live here and work in both traditional and contemporary forms and subjects. We feel privileged to know so many diverse artists and to be able to share their work with the Cheyenne community.”

Featured every second Thursday, April – December, from 5-8 PM, Arts Cheyenne partners with Visit Cheyenne and Cheyenne DDA/Main Street to host Art, Design & Dine. On October 9, AD&D will repeat their participation in American Crafts Week (October 3-12 across America) with a Wyoming craftsperson featured in Clay Paper Scissors’ new location. Mike Olson, a ceramics artist from Casper, is their first show in this new space. “Both Mark and I have liked Mike Olson’s work since we first saw it in Casper–the simple pleasing forms, the glazes, the mix of functional and sculptural work,” Camellia says.

Mike Olson, Salt Cellar 2 HR Mike olson, Tumblers HR

Mike Olson attended Casper College and earned his BFA at the University of North Dakota and his MFA in 2003 at Wichita State University in Kansas, both in ceramics. Mike Olson’s work for this inaugural show include stoneware pieces, both handbuilt and thrown. Mike explains that this show’s work is “…about daydreaming and how I like to float away in thought while watching migrating birds, windmills turning or clouds floating by. There is a peace and calm represented by the subtle, simple forms I enjoy creating during the slow motions of working on the treadle wheel.” Mike returned to Casper to start a studio and teach at Casper College, where he is the ceramics instructor.

The show’s opening is October 9, 2014, from 5-8 during the monthly Art Design & Dine in Cheyenne (artdesigndine.org). Mike Olson’s work will be displayed at Clay Paper Scissors through November, with another show opening on the 13th during Art Design & Dine.

Clay Paper Scissors is located at 1513 Carey Avenue in Cheyenne, and can be contacted for available hours and appointments. Call 307.631.6039 or shoot them an email at claypaperscissors@gmail.com. For more information on Art, Design & Dine and their October, November and December 2014 events, visit artdesigndine.org.

MADE IN WYOMING – Rawhide Studio

We are thrilled to team with the Wyoming Business Council to feature a Wyoming First business every week on our blog! Wyoming First is a program that promotes Wyoming member businesses. Visit their website (click here) to learn more about this service — and if you are a Wyoming business who’s not a member, be sure to inquire about membership! There are many benefits!

This week we are featuring Rawhide Studio of Cheyenne

David & Georgia Rowswell, Rawhide Studio @ Artful Hand Gallery, 301 E 1st Ave, Cheyenne, WY  82001

(307) 229-5183 rhsjewelry@gmail.com  www.rawhidestudio.com

David and Georgia Rowswell are the owners and designers behind Rawhide Studio, which began as a way to use small scraps of rawhide left from some of Dave Rowswell’s sculpture and chair webbing projects. Dave experimented with a few designs, made a piece for his wife Georgia and began showing his jewelry to several friends who encouraged him to keep at it. That was just last year! The designs and business has really taken off since then!

Dave and Georgia are both artists and have collaborated on many projects. Rawhide Studio is no different. Dave makes the jewelry and does most of the designing. Georgia wears many hats as the studio manager, photographer, online store developer and bookkeeper!

They welcome custom orders and will work with each customer to make their ideas a reality.

Rawhide Studio jewelry can be purchased locally at Wyoming Home, online at www.rawhidestudio.com, and by appointment at the studio, Artful Hand Gallery. On the website is also a listing of stores and galleries around the state and region. Their jewelry is handmade one at a time but still priced right at $19 to $48 dollars.

Rawhide Studio focuses on contemporary Western design, using a traditional material in a new way. Rawhide is very lightweight, durable, and translucent. Because it is a natural material, no two pieces are exactly alike! Own a piece and you’ll be ”Ahead of the Herd in Jewelry Style.”

Sheridan — Tawni Shuler Show at Sagebrush Community Art Center

The Sagebrush Community Art Center hosts “Unraveling,” an exhibition of artwork by Tawni Shuler, which opens September 22 at the Historic Depot on 201 E. 5th St in Sheridan.  An Artist’s Reception is scheduled for September 27th, from 5-7pm.  The show runs through October 27th.

Shuler’s her work is inspired by memories of growing up in Wyoming and experiencing the western landscape and its life cycles.  She works primarily with painting and drawing materials, in addition to mixed media, such as collected pieces of the landscape: bones, plants and dirt.  Her work has shown nationally, and Shuler recently participated in the Jentel Artist Residency Program in Banner.

Shuler states, “It is the experience in the details of a place that define it, make it unforgettable and almost magical.  I am inspired by memories of landscape: the life cycles of its inhabitants and plants, the drastic seasons, possessing qualities of both grittiness and frailty.”

Shuler is currently Visiting Artist at Sheridan College, where she teaches painting and drawing.

CHEYENNE:  Art, Design & Dine Celebrate American Craft Week — Click here to see the feature in our Fall 2012 issue of Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine!

In a world of high tech, instant and mass produced, the hand crafted takes us back to an appreciation of “the irregular and intimate quality of things made entirely by the human hand.” (Willa Cather) Every October, crafts events and artisans around the nation are highlighted during American Craft Week. Crafts supporters can access events across the nation at their website at americancraftweek.com.  Art tour organizer, originator, (and talented mixed media artist) Georgia Rowswell found out about the event last year and quickly scheduled a show for her gallery, Artful Hand Studio & Gallery in Cheyenne. “I paired Terry Kruezer with Curt Theobald, both gifted crafts people from the area. Wyoming had no representation on the American Craft Week website that year until my gallery signed up. This year will be different!” proclaims Rowswell.

Cheyenne’s Art Design & Dine will be celebrating along with the rest of the country during its regularly scheduled monthly art tour on October 11th from 5-8 pm. Tour venues are working together to provide a special evening that honors the talents of local and regional crafts people. Here is a sampling of what you can expect from female artisans during October’s art tour:

Fiber artist Christi Beckman’s show, Intersections, will be on display at Artful Hand Studio & Gallery.  Artist reception will be held during Art Design & Dine on Thursday, October 11 from 5-8 PM. Additional show hours on Friday, October 12 from 5-8 PM and Saturday October 13 from 10-3 PM. Christi will be demonstrating some of her techniques on October 12 from 6-8 PM. Artful Hand Studio & Gallery is located at 302 East 1st Ave Cheyenne WY .

The Nagle Warren Mansion (located at 222 East 17th Street in Cheyenne) will be featuring four crafts women:  dumpster glass by Beth Ruli; basketry by Linda Behrens; rosemaling by Diane Edwards and quilting by Cindy Paul. The show opens October 1, with an artists’ reception and rosemailing demonstration during Art Design & Dine on October 11 from 5-8. The show runs through October 27. The gallery is open during regular business hours. For further information call 307-637-3333.

In addition to these lovely women artisans, Steve Schrepferman’s ceramic sculptures will be on display at Clay Paper Scissors Gallery and Studio, located at 1506 Thomes Avenue in Cheyenne. Steve hails from Cody, Wyoming and will be on hand to talk about his work during the art tour on October 11 from 5-8 PM . The show continues until November 30. For more information and gallery hours call 307-631-6039.

Art Design & Dine is pleased to be a part of American Craft Week. “The creative sector is an important part of the vitality of any city and Cheyenne is no exception,” Georgia says. “This is a great opportunity to meet the creative forces behind the work and just enjoy a night of the arts.”

GILLETTE — BUCKING H DESIGNS

Artist Heidi Huggins creates custom painted art utilizing the tools of the trade out west. “Ranch and Rodeo are a way of life for me, but more so my art is my life,” Heidi says. “I strive to combine the two with hand-painted Bronc Halters and other horse tack.”  In these awards designed and pictured above, made for the Thar family’s Ranch Sorting event, Heidi is excited to help with events that are geared toward the entire family being able to get out there and compete.  “I am very proud to be able to paint award halters for them and any other Wyoming ranch or rodeo club in the future,” Heidi says.
