This week we are featuring Simple Joys Soap of Sheridan, Wyoming

Susan Flynn, Simple Joys Soap  PO Box 6461  Sheridan, WY 82801  307-672-2130  sflynn@wyoming.com  www.simplejoyssoap.com

Simple Joys Soap began when Susan developed an obsession with soap-making! There were so many essential oil (scent) combinations to try out and so many recipes! As she was purchasing ingredients in a Good Health Emporium & Warehouse Market in Sheridan, both owners began asking her if she would like to sell soap to them. Of course, Susan said yes!  She was making so much more than she could use or give away, so it seemed to be the way to go — and with that, Simple Joys Soap was launched!

As a family business, Susan’s daughter and son-in-law help her with production and distribution.  In busy times, she has also had help from friends and other family members.  Simple Joys Soap is an entirely home-based business.

Although there are about 18 different scents, there are still many more possible combinations of essential oils and additives.  Susan enjoys trying new ideas for special projects, so custom orders are always welcome.  Also, for a nominal one-time fee, she offers custom soap labels to wholesale customers.  For example, Paradise Guest Ranch, The Ranch at Ucross, and others have their logo on the soap label.  In these businesses, Simple Joys Soap is available to the guests to use in their room and in the gift shops to buy as gifts.

For retail customers, Simple Joys Soap may be purchased by a phone, email, or the website:www.simplejoyssoap,com.  Wholesale customers can email Susan at sflynn@wyoming.com or simplejoyssoap@wyoming.com, or phone 307-672-2130.

There are three sizes of soap: Hospitality, Half-size, and Full-size bars. Retail prices range from $1.00 to $5.00. Simple Joys Soap is made from a vegetable-based product made with high-quality ingredients and scented with essential oils. The labels accurately describe the ingredients found in the soap. Whenever possible, Susan supports local businesses when purchasing ingredients such as honey, coffee, organic oatmeal, etc.  Extra soap is donated to local charities yearly.  Simple Joys Soap is passionate about recycling ingredient containers!

Sevenfold Spice:  JD Dotzler Casper, WY 307-251-5424 sesvenfoldspice@yahoo.com www.sevenfoldspice.com

JD Dotzler received his certificate from culinary school in June 2005, and then apprenticeship in a restaurant as a chef’s assistant at a local country club.  The head chef at the country club stressed that he wanted specific dishes seasoned exactly the same every time.  JD suggested that they blend ingredients to make a base seasoning that would always be the same, to which Chef Kevin said, “What a great idea!”  That was JD’s first spice blend.

JD also has family and friends with food allergies. He realized that there weren’t any “all natural” seasonings on the market, so he created what is now his “Master Blend.”  Those same friends and family members encouraged JD to offer his spice blends to the general public.  In 2010, Sevenfold Spice was registered as a trade name in the State of Wyoming.

Sevenfold Spice is a family business; his brother assists him with the marketing, and JD handles the development and production end of the Sevenfold Spice product line.

Sevenfold Spice acquires specialized herbs and spice powders from Savory Spice Shop in Denver, CO.  He takes bulk ingredients and blends them to specific recipes in a commercial kitchen in Casper.  The spices are MSG free, gluten free and have no preservatives.  Sevenfold Spice is pleased to offer an “all natural” product for now, and will continue to look into an organic line of spices.

Sevenfold Spice prepares custom blends as well!  Requests for “salt free” come in frequently and Salt Free Master, Salt Free Habanero and Salt Free Garlic blends are regular inventory items.  They offer two value packages: “A Best of the Best Pack” containing the top five selling spice blends; and “A Grillers Choice Pack,” which offers three blends and two grill rubs.  Customers can order any combination of spices and rubs from their website at www.sevenfoldspice.com.  Sevenfold Spice also offers free shipping on all orders over $20.

Sevenfold Spice blends and rubs are offered at 8-10 retail outlets in Casper and Douglas. They can be purchased online at www.sevenfoldspice.com.   The price range for 4 oz blends and rubs ranging from $6 to $8 per bottle.

Our promise…..       “Making food taste great… Naturally”

Currently Sevenfold Spice has ten spice blends and seven spice rubs.

Sevenfold Spice is all natural all the time.

This week we are featuring Cap-Lures of Casper, WY

Michael Walock, Cap-Lures  2400 W 39th   Casper, WY 82604   307-237-3915

cap-lures@bresnan.net     www.caplures.com

Michael Walock was born and raised in North Dakota where hunting, fishing, trapping, camping and outdoor recreation is the way of life. He began fishing at the age of two with his father and has continued for 57 years to date and plans to continue.  Back then fishing rods and reels, tackle and lures were not as modern as they are today. Michael and his father made several lures from wood or whatever they could find.  Fishing in Canada once, losing most of what little tackle he had, Michael made a spinner from a pop top can, which worked great. Many times they could not afford bait nor did they have nets to seine minnows, but they could always dig worms. Michael started to experiment with bottle caps in 1972 but could not get the cap to spin.

In 1979, Michael move to Casper, where his interests in fishing, hunting etc. became anew due to the state of Wyoming’s beauty, and the game and fish that abound here. He again started to work on the cap lure and in 2010 Michael perfected the lure while providing an outlet to recycle bottle caps. Michael’s wife and son assist in all aspects of this family oriented business, in which the Walock family takes great pride.

All the lures are functional and some people just collect them. The lures have caught many fish including the trout pictured on their web site. They can be used with live bait and at various depths with sinkers.  There is no other lure like them in the world.  The lures are original and patented; and there is the added bonus of recycling the caps.  Customers can also place custom orders.

Get in on the lure action by catching a display or signed, dated and framed collection series by retailing them in your store. Email Cap-Lures direct, visit their web site,  or visit one of these retailers.

This week we are featuring NM Works of Cheyenne, by artist Nancy McCalla

nancy@nmworks-cheyenne.com     nmworks-cheyenne.com     307-637-5404

Nancy McCalla is a Wyoming native, raised on a farm along the Platte River between Glenrock and Casper. Growing up, she was an avid “rock hound,” always carting around a box of rocks. She found meaning, companionship and solace in the stones.  In 1976 Nancy moved to Cheyenne and began a 35 year career working for the Wyoming State Government.  In 2004, she attended a metal working class at Laramie County Community College. It was a revelation! Metal met stone and she discovered an entirely new and exciting world.

In 2010 Nancy retired from state government and started her jewelry/art design business. During the 35 years she worked for the state, Nancy spent a lot of time listening to people say to her, “Oh you work for the state, why don’t you get a real job?” So her new enterprise became NM Works – sort of her way of declaring that she now has a “real” job! Nancy feels very lucky to have had a rewarding long term career that ultimately helped her discover her passion to create and to be able to pursue it, and she hope others are as fortunate.

Nancy wants her work to directly reflect Wyoming’s western heritage and our state’s natural beauty. Each piece starts with a concept or insight that she wants to share with others. Sometimes the concept is inspired by the materials she uses – stones, metal, leather, gourds.  Nancy always wants her pieces to allow others to see the materials used in a new and different way.

Nancy likes to combine wearable art, with non-wearable art. A small gourd bowl serves as a decorative storage/display piece for the pendant and earrings from the “Hoop Dancer” series.  She enjoys combining natural materials such as gourds, shells, feathers, etc., with metal and finished and/or rough stones.

Nancy works with brass, copper, sterling silver and 14/20 karat gold filled metals.   She uses both precious and semi-precious stones and cabochons in her pieces. Some of the precious stones used include faceted black diamonds and blue diamonds; un-faceted or raw cognac and grey diamonds, and sapphires. Some of the semi-precious stones used include: garnet, turquoise, jasper, agate, jade and  amber. She also uses: gourds, leather, shells, feathers, elk ivory.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do Nancy create custom pieces?
Nancy finds it exciting to work with her customers to design and create a piece that is unique and one of a kind.  Depending on what the order is and the materials used, prices could vary from $25.00 to $500.00 on a custom order. She has made rings, earrings and pendants for customers.

Where can people look at or purchase products? Are they located in any stores in our area? Would Nancy like them to be?
If you’d like to purchase any of Nancy’s beautiful and unique pieces go to  nmworks-cheyenne.com.  She can always be reached by phone (307-637-5404) or email (nanmccalla@gmail.com) as well.  She would be thrilled to have some of her products featured at Wyoming Home here in Cheyenne and in Thoenig’s Fine Jewelry in Jackson.  Nancy would also be happy and honored to see her products featured in other communities as well.

Keep up with Nancy and NM Works on her Facebook page.

This week we are featuring This Old Barn from Casper, Wyoming

This Old Barn, Casper — Kathryn George thisoldbarn@atwy.net 307-234-0942

Kathryn has always loved woodworking. While working construction 10 -12 years ago, she got interested in working with barn wood and got hooked. Kathryn hauled a 10×20 shed out to her ranch, southeast of Casper, and decided to set up a small shop to start her business, which she still works out of.

Kathryn got the name for her business after reading the THIS OLD HOUSE magazines, and started selling wooden wheelbarrow and birdhouses at craft shows for extra income.  What is really unique about Kathryn’s products is that all the wood and iron and trinkets come from the Wyoming prairies. She is lucky enough to have friends with falling down barns and old dumps. She has never incorporated (made in china) in her pieces.

She has quite a variety of products produced: wheelbarrows, birdhouses, jelly cupboards, kitchen cupboards, benches and plant stands, shadow boxes – she has also started making planters out of old iron beds. There is really no limit to what she might build. Having an imagination with old wood and iron helps.

The price of a piece depends on how long it took to build and what particular items may be attached to it – anywhere between $20.00 dollars to $200.00. The shovel birdhouses are $65.00 and have been her best sellers along with the birdhouse benches which are $150.00.

flower bed planter

Kathryn participates in local (Casper and surrounding area) craft shows, Twelve Days of Christmas, Bear Trap Summer Festival, and has aspirations to be in the art fair in Jackson. You can e-mail or call for questions and special orders. You can also drive out to her shop and look around at her “Sanford and Sons” collection of barn wood and rust.

This week, we are featuring Best of the West Productions of Cody, Wyoming:

Jack Peterson, President/Owner jack@thebestofthewest.net   www.longrangestore.com

Best of the West Productions (BOTW) initially formed in 2003 as a hunting television production company, formerly known as Bridger Trails Video.  Their specialty was long range hunting and the system of choice was a 7mm Magnum with a Leupold VariX 3 scope.  As BOTW used these systems, they found various shortcomings and began developing their own high quality custom gun and a rifle scope that incorporates ballistic information in a turret-reticle design.  In 2007 BOTW rolled out the Huskemaw 5-20×50 rifle scope with a custom calibrated turret that matched a specific load in a specific rifle to a specific elevation and temperature.  This rifle scope was the first of its kind and, with BOTW proprietary software, was able to precisely calculate a bullet’s trajectory in specific environmental conditions.  BOTW could also precisely calculate the amount of wind deflection that would occur and give shooters the means of compensating for wind drift.

The BOTW philosophy, which flies in the face of philosophies that have stood for generations, was not welcomed in the hunting community: (1) Bullet performance is more important than velocity; (2) Ethical hunting can occur beyond 300 yards and even at extreme ranges; (3) Compensating for wind drift is not a guessing game.  BOTW television series was the means to prove all were wrong.  They demonstrate time and time again that shots at extreme ranges are possible with this technology.

As news began to spread, Best of the West emerged as the Long Range Hunting Authority.  The success of the television series has led to the online retail store, LongRangeStore.com, which carries gear featured in the show, and a custom ammunition product line, which is specifically for extended ranges.

Featured products: Huskemaw Blue Diamond 5-20×50 rifle scope ($1,349), Huskemaw Blue Diamond 3-12×42 rifle scope ($999). Products can be purchased from LongRangeStore.com or 130 dealers located across the country.  A map of dealers is located at HuskemawOptics.com. Long range rifle systems can be custom ordered.
