LANDER:  An exhibition of the Wyoming Art Party

Lander, WY- The Lander Art Center is pleased to present “A Portrait of Wyoming” a collaborative art project by The Wyoming Art Party featuring the work of 38 Wyoming artists, writers and craft folk. This traveling exhibition will open its Lander showing on Friday, May 22 from 6-8pm at the Lander Art Center. This reception is free and open to the public.

The Wyoming Art Party is an organization started by two local Laramie artists, June Glasson and Meg Thompson, whose mission is to organize art projects and shows that connect individuals, scattered throughout Wyoming, who work in different regions, disciplines (fine arts, writing, music, craft) and from different backgrounds, with the aim of creating work that truly represents art in Wyoming as it is, rather than as it is thought to be.

For this show the participants where invited to create a “Portrait of Wyoming” in whatever medium they chose. They were then paired with another artist whom they would trade pieces with and finish each other’s piece. The aim was to connect individuals from across the state who don’t usually work together and to encourage artists to create something outside their day to day work. The heart of this project is collaboration.

Exhibition on display from May 22 – July 4, 2015.

Bonnie_Marris_REd_Alert_30_x_48_Oil_195000Trailside Galleries is pleased to present its annual “Wildlife Discovery”, exhibition and sale featuring all new works from an outstanding group of nationally known artists who are inspired to paint all things wild! Jackson is the perfect setting for this show as the area is a virtual Mecca for wildlife enthusiasts including photographers, nature buffs and of course, wildlife artists! Many of the country’s most noted wildlife painters will participate in the event, bringing an eclectic mixture of wildlife and natural subjects from around the world including big game animals from the African savannah, North American mammals, as well as delicate birds and aquatic subjects. While the artists each bring their own unique interpretation of animals to their canvas, they all share a deep commitment to the preservation of wildlife and our natural world.

Participating artists include Bonnie Marris, Jan Martin McGuire, James Morgan, Ralph Oberg, Lindsay Scott, Renso Tamse, Adam Smith, Lori Forest, Sarah Woods and Dustin Van Wechel among others.

Wildlife art continues to be one of the most collected genres of art in the country. Given the heightened awareness of global warming and fragile ecosystems, the genre seems to have taken on a whole new dimension, as the artists strive not only to create an esthetically pleasing image, but to have it serve as an educational tool to bring more awareness to preservation.

JACKSON: New York City Ballet Visits Dancers’ Workshop

Watch the New York City Ballet…

images provided by Dancers’ Workshop

This summer Dancers’ Workshop welcomes the incredible artists of New York City Ballet MOVES back to Jackson for a fourth year in a row!  For five days in August, the company will fill DW’s spaces at the Center for the Arts in Jackson with the grace and elegance of ballet executed at its highest level, an experience that’s certainly worth taking a weekend trip to Jackson this summer.

While in Jackson, NYCB company members will continue the activities that have become a tradition of their yearly visits by teaching eight master classes for dancers age 11 and up, holding two free open rehearsals, and performing three shows in the Center Theater.  In addition to all of these programs, this year DW and NYCB add a new educational focus to the residency by offering a lecture-demonstration performance and a lecture/discussion of historical film footage with Jean-Pierre Frolich, NYCB Artistic Administrator and expert on the work of Jerome Robbins (who was one of NYCB’s Founding Choreographers, and whose dances are still performed by the company.)

Made up of corps, soloist, and principal level dancers, New York City Ballet MOVES is an elite group of dancers drawn from the NYCB main company who tour to small and mid-size theaters across the U.S. and the world.  Four years ago, Dancers’ Workshop was the first presenter ever to host an NYCB MOVES tour, and the success of that first trip to Jackson has continued ever since.  Every year DW presents NYCB MOVES, dance students in Jackson and the region get to learn from premiere ballet masters, adult artists and dancers in Jackson get inspiration from the classical work they see, and Jackson audiences get the chance to watch one of the world’s greatest ballet companies in a beautiful, intimate setting.  In return, the NYCB dancers, musicians, and staff members who visit Jackson every year say that it is the absolute highlight of their touring season.

For anyone still looking for where to take a short summer vacation, Jackson Hole the first week of August should be high on their list!  Jackson is served by direct flights from Denver and Salt Lake, and the drives from Montana, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah include many scenic byways.  Beautiful weather with blue skies and 80 degree temperatures is typical for Jackson in August, and the area offers something for everyone- both low and high impact outdoor sports, lovely scenery and small town, excellent accommodations (the Four Seasons, and Aman Resorts have properties in Jackson, in addition to locally owned operations Hotel Terra, the Rusty Parrot Lodge, the Historic Wort Hotel, and Town Square Inns), wonderful dining, and an abundance of cultural and artistic events.  A long weekend in Jackson could include a day in Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone, almost any outdoor sport you could imagine, attending concerts by New York City Ballet and the Grand Teton Music Festival orchestra, a day wandering the historic downtown with its iconic town square and elk antler arches, perusing galleries with local and internationally known artists’ work, and taking advantage of Jackson’s well known outstanding hospitality services.

For more information about Dancers’ Workshop and this summer’s presentation of New York City Ballet MOVES, visit www.dwjh.org or call 307-733-6398.

Granted:  Rebecca G. Weed Artist Statement

When I work, I am thinking about permanence and impermanence, I am thinking about time and the way we measure it, and I am thinking about what is beautiful.

The beauty is in what we do measure, what we can’t measure and what we forget to measure. I was raised in a landscape that has been described as bleak, harsh, empty, even ugly.

From the time I was small I took it for granted that everyone could see the horizon. A definitive line where the land overlapped the sky was always in view. When I travel to locations that are filled with trees, buildings, or people that obscure our sense of space and direction I feel claustrophobic.

In this place I grew up an occurrence became a story:  a plane overhead, the only thing to briefly break the emptiness and silence. Sitting on the ground next to a pile of sagebrush I felt everything:  longing, loneliness, excitement, adventure, the smug security that I was in a place that only one person could occupy at any given time. And there was the story. A girl, dirt, and an airplane. And this story goes on and on and on.

Within this landscape, within America, within an ever accelerating world, there is a lack of heroism. There is a lack of signposts that mark our individual time. There is a lack of the archetype, the myth, the importance of presence. These are human constructs and they may be evolving into other manifestations. They may be no longer useful. They may be right in front of me. Wherever or whatever they are I feel the necessity to mark my time; to celebrate a bit, or mourn, to fall in love.

Merchant of Venice performed in Rock Springs — image by www.sweetwaternow.com

CASPER: Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company Presents Merchant of Venice

The Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company of Lander has presented the Merchant of Venice throughout Wyoming — and the Casper show is coming July 27! Visit Artcore of Casper’s website for information on events, schedule and ticket information. The Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company has been performing the classics of Shakespeare throughout the Cowboy State since 1999.

WY Shakespeare Festival Company — Director’s Notes

Welcome to Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company’s fourteenth season.

We are happy to present The Merchant of Venice, performed by the Touring Company and Twelfth Night, performed by the Academy. Although Shakespeare wrote the former play four to six years earlier than the latter; both plays remain popular and enduring comedies; both stories have a theme centered on a ring. In both plays the heroine cross dresses and in both {plays}, William Shakespeare brings up Pythagoras’ theory of the transmigration of souls*. The choice to produce each play was inspired by the wonderful actors’ enthusiasm to give them life.

Love in Shakespeare’s plays is rarely a simple matter, however it almost always is presented as an example of humanity’s noblest impulses; the best of what we can become. The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night,  as most of the great comedies, conclude with blissful unions.

Although the two plays’ classification as comedies are no exemption, The Merchant of Venice love matches bring grief in their wake, just as the pursuit of justice – ostensibly a righteous mission – also proves an act of inhuman cruelty. Likewise, the threat of revenge by the wounded Malvolio at the close of Twelfth Night, embitters the atmosphere of the joyful couples.

For those of us who live Shakespeare’s works, setting this year’s plays in modern time is a natural choice. Wyoming’s communities surrounded by dried up oceans; more space than development, seemed apt for the world of Illyria in Twelfth Night. Although The Merchant of Venice is placed in Venice, Italy, the bottom-line-obssessed world of today resonates more deeply than most in suggesting how the calculations of profit and loss are integral to even the most intimate human relationships.

Our aim is to open the door wide for you to enter Shakespeare’s profound understanding of human complexity rendered with such care that we can register sharply how both cruelty and compassion, ignorance and intelligence, mercy and injustice reside, not just in any human heart, but also in every human heart.      — DS, Director —

*Transmigration of Souls

Transmigration of Souls or Methempsicose is a philosophical doctrine, whose birth is registered in India and is believed to have migrated to Egypt, from where Pythagoras[1] adopted the conceptual system and later brought it to life in Greece.

In his mythical dissertation about the transmigrations of the wandering souls, Pythagoras tells the story of a myriad of wandering souls, each migrating from body to body along a path of recurrence amid the becoming of the All. Yet, for the Pythagoreans, this story does not describe the passive revolution of a circle, but a pathway for an active exploration of the All and return to the Divine, or, in other words, the various Manifestations of All That Is. This endeavor is strenuous as it occurs amidst a suspension within the double bind of nativity and fatality, again and again to be born and to die, and to be reborn as still another being. The thread of the narrative, of reminiscence, is always severed with each demise amid the labyrinth of mortal existence. Yet, as the narrative that composes the lives of a soul is a rope of many threads, the persistent re-articulation of the narrative instigates a mnemopoiesis of remembrance that transcends the individual mortal life amid the broader travels of the soul.

It is said that his disciples taught that through Methempsicose, it was possible for a soul, after having a brief or long period in the kingdom of souls, to return to inhabit another physical human body or even an animal body, and to proceed with its period of learning and purification until it is time again to return cleansed and ascended to the Original Source of all life.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming – Iconic images of the American West taken by more than 50 photographers spanning more than a century of real-time issues and conditions will be on display as “National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West” opens in 10 national venues, including the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, on October 27, 2012. The largest simultaneous U.S. museum opening of its kind, the exhibition includes 75 photographs that stand alone as both fine art and journalistic moments in the history and culture of the Western U.S. The National Museum of Wildlife Art is spearheading the unprecedented event along with nine of its associates in the Museums West consortium and the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will be on display at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole from October 27, 2012, through April 28, 2013.

Selected from among thousands in the National Geographic Image Collection, the 75 images are the work of photographers ranging from such well-known names as William Henry Jackson and Ansel Adams to contemporary photographers William Albert Allard and Bruce Dale.

“’National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West’ represents the first time a photography exhibition of this magnitude has opened at so many U.S. venues simultaneously,” says James McNutt, President and CEO of the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyo.; McNutt is one of the exhibition organizers and a contributor to the book accompanying the exhibition. “The exhibition presents a powerful and nuanced portrait of the West over more than a century, and it’s exciting that the medium of photography allows multiple openings across the country for greater impact in sharing the combined vision of such an important group of photographers.”

A dedicated website, featuring exhibition images, photographer interviews, interactive features and more will be available online at www.photographsofthewest.org as the exhibition opening date approaches. The following is a list of the 10 participating museums:

A companion book to the exhibition, National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West: Capturing 125 Years of Majesty, Spirit and Adventure (National Geographic Books, October 2012), features more than 180 photographs, including rarely published and never-before-seen images.

The exhibition is organized by the National Museum of Wildlife Art in collaboration with the National Geographic Society and Museums West. Presented by the Mays Family Foundation.

Coming to the SAGE Exhibit Gallery in Sheridan…

Artist Escape II on Display at SAGE Gallery

Artists Gayle Barnett and Susan Beasley have teamed together once again, combining their creations to put together a holiday show.  This body of work will contain oil paintings by Beasley, and watercolors and oils by Barnett.

Susan Beasley

“Final Straw,” Gayle Barnett

Both women, raised on Montana ranches, have enjoyed creating art since their youth.  Beasley says that even when time does not allow her to paint, in her mind she is still creating, thinking color, composition, and how to share what she is feeling through art.  Beasley likes to work outdoors, gathering photos and documentation, then return to her studio where she creates her final product.  Barnett, who has created watercolors for many years, has more recently taken up oil painting, and cannot say enough about her enjoyment of plein air painting.  Painting on location has improved her powers of observation and how she interprets what she sees.  Her subjects are varied but are mostly of the landscapes, people, and animals of the rural life she loves so much.

The show will run from November 2 through the end of November at the SAGE Exhibit Gallery at the Sheridan College Main Street location.   The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An artist reception will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 from 5-7 p.m.  It is open to the public and refreshments will be served.  One of the artists will be at the gallery every Saturday during the month of November, working and greeting guests.  In addition, artists will be available during the Christmas Stroll with cards and prints for sale.

Read on for information about the silent auction benefiting SAGE, “Artly Altered Furniture,” will be held in conjunction with this show.  The silent auction closes at 4:00 pm on November 30th.

“Jabbersocky”, painted by SAGE members Kathy Sabine & Carina Wenckus.

In conjunction with the “Art Escape II” show, The SAGE Exhibit Gallery will also feature the annual “Artly-Altered Furniture” Silent Auction Fundraiser.  See and bid on fun furniture embellished by local artists.  Proceeds benefit SAGE.

Sagebrush Community Art Center’s Front Gallery presents “On Fire,” a collection of “sizzling” photographs by Larry Schwarm, a renowned photographer from Kansas.  The show runs from October 29th to November 30th in the Historic Train Depot at 201 E. 5th in Sheridan.  An Artist’s Reception will be held on November 29th from 5:30-7:30.  It is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Schwarm says of his work:

“Relationships between man and nature, with its inherent cycles of destruction and renewal, have been an enduring theme in my photographs.  Most of these images are from a longtime project of photographing controlled agricultural burning in the middle United States… In every culture fire is symbolic.  It is good and evil, soothing and terrifying, protection and threat, destruction and rebirth.  It heats our homes and it can destroy our homes.  It has a connection [to] our collective unconscious.”

The Sagebrush Community Art Center Galleries are currently operating on winter hours: Thursday through Saturday, 10:00am -4:00pm.  This schedule does not affect the classes, workshops, and Jentel presentations held in the classroom area of the depot.  Please contact the Sagebrush Community Art Center at 307-674-1970 to find out more about classes for all ages offered at the depot.

Children’s Book Illustrator Sylvia Long Wins 2012 Bull-Bransom Award

Museum honors A Butterfly Is Patient with medal for nature illustration excellence

Jackson Hole, Wyoming – May 11, 2012 – Children’s book illustrator Sylvia Long is the recipient of the 2012 Bull-Bransom Award, announced the National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States at a reception at the museum last night in Jackson Hole, Wyo.  Long was selected for the award, given annually for excellence in children’s book illustration with a wildlife and nature focus, for the 2011 picture book A Butterfly Is Patient (Chronicle Books), written by Dianna Hutts Aston.  Long was in Jackson Hole at the National Museum of Wildlife Art to receive the award, which was presented as part of the museum’s Celebration of Young Artists event.

Illustrations for A Butterfly is Patient, above, won 2012 Bull-Bransom Award for artist Sylvia Long, far right, shown accepting the award from National Museum of Wildlife Art Board of Trustees member Lynn Friess.

“Sylvia Long’s illustrations were lauded for their detail and striking compositions by this year’s Bull-Bransom judges, who used the adjectives ‘delightful,’ ‘engaging,’ and ‘absolutely gorgeous’ among others to compliment her stellar work,” said National Museum of Art Curator of Art Adam Harris, who serves annually as one of the judges for the award.  “Long’s illustrations fly off the page and enhance the wonderfully written text.” Past Bull-Bransom Award winners Kevin Waldron and Jerry Pinkney were also on the judging panel.

Animals are a favorite subject for Sylvia Long, who admits to preferring drawing animals to people and does a great deal of advance research especially for non-fiction work like A Butterfly Is Patient – spending as much or sometimes more time on learning her subject than on the actual drawing.  It was Long’s interest in all things natural – including an interest in birds that dates back to childhood – that originally led her editor to connect her with author Dianna Hutts Aston.  Their first collaboration, An Egg Is Quiet, went on to win more than 20 awards including from the Association of Children’s Librarians and a Publishers Weekly “Off the Cuff” award for best non-fiction for treatment of a subject.  A Butterfly Is Patient is the third in what has become a series of nature picture books by the duo.

Long, whose very first published title Ten Little Rabbits was named best picture book of the year by the International Reading Association back in 1991, hopes her passion for the natural world will inspire kids to get outside and really observe their surroundings.  Still, asked what aspect of her work is most fulfilling, she responds, “The thought that somewhere ‘out there’ a child will go to their bookshelf and pull out one of ‘my’ books, crawl up in their parent’s or grandparent’s lap and settle in for that close, comforting time, sharing a story.”

Created in the tradition of such prestigious children’s book illustrator honors as the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King and Hans Christian Andersen awards, the Bull-Bransom Award is presented in the form of a medal and $5,000 cash award.  The National Museum of Wildlife Art named the award for Charles Livingston Bull and Paul Bransom, among the first American artist-illustrators to specialize in wildlife subjects.

A member of the Museums West consortium and accredited by the American Association of Museums, the museum, officially designated the National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States by an act of Congress in 2008, provides an exciting calendar of exhibitions from its permanent collection and changing exhibitions from around the globe.  A complete schedule of exhibitions and events is available online at www.wildlifeart.org.  The museum is also active on Facebook at wildlifeartjh and on Twitter at @wildlifeartjh.

CASPER — Art Teacher Nancy Lee Receives Tribal Sportswear’s Heart for Art Award from Fashion Crossroads

Art teacher Nancy Lee, a native of Grand Forks, ND, inspires kids daily through her art instruction at Dean Morgan Junior High in Casper.  Today, Nancy appreciates her children for the unique people that they are – and uses her art instruction to help them embrace their own individual personalities. But, she says, the road to take her here has not always been clear to her…

Nancy began her own art instruction at the age of six, when her parents signed her up for Saturday morning art lessons. She continued these weekly lessons until ninth grade, serving as practice for the students who were becoming art teachers at that time.  “I thought I died and went to Heaven,” Nancy says.  “I would wait to go. I experienced a lot of things, working from still life and learning how to make prints at an early age. It was pure joy. It was me!” As a child, Nancy found inspiration through artists at the nearby University of ND, as well as journeying to Europe to view the works of major artists.

Nancy began by teaching art in Dickinson, ND. “I wasn’t very successful there,” she says. She then moved to Missoula, where she earned her Master’s in art.  At UND, Nancy had focused on intaglio printmaking, spending a lot of time creating monoprints. A presentation on handmade paper sparked Nancy’s creativity, and at the University of MT, Nancy developed paper pieces as her Master’s thesis.  Her thesis focused on paper pieces that were patterns, and made statements about Nancy’s personality. Today, Nancy’s creations are abstract, involving found objects from the land and clay pieces that are integrated into paper pieces.

When it came to teaching art, Nancy struggled to find her niche. “It took me a long time to figure out what I was doing in teaching art,” Nancy says. “Sometimes my quote was, ‘I hope I can fake it until I can figure out what I am doing.’” She often went home and cried, thinking that the kids were being mean. “I realized that I was really talking down to them and setting up harsh bounderies they just had to break!” Nancy says. That realization formed a turning point for her, and helped her find her creative and emotional niche with her students. “The first thing I figured out was that you have to build a relationship with junior high/middle level kids. They are really not bad at all if you treat with respect and care about them,” Nancy says. “They wil do anything for you –if you treat them right and they trust you. They will respect you if you actually ‘teach’ them something and have structure.”

Nancy shares that the common emotional pitfalls of the early teenage years are there for a reason.  “At times they layer negatively  because they have to protect their inner self,” Nancy says. “My first weapon is always humor — first comes the kid, then art will follow.”  She found a way to develop art projects that offered structure but also the opportunity for kids to develop their own ideas of who they are. She also found that strengthening the process versus the product was key. “Once that went out the door and I concentrated on a positive, non-critical atmosphere, their work got a lot better. It was so much easier! Work smart not hard!” Nancy adds with a smile.

Nancy’s ability to learn and mold herself and her teaching skills is backed by a history of strong women in her family.  “I am the third Maude Dickinson to graduate from the UND,” Nancy shares. The first Maud Dickinson was a commander in the Coast Guard, earned her Master’s in English and wrote manuals for the Coast Guard in Washington, DC in the early 1930s.  Then came Maude Dickinson Wood, Nancy’s role model, who traveled to UND in a Model T on miserable roads.  Maude Wood began college at 16, earned her degree in English, and taught school to at risk children at Nebraska State School.  Miss Wood used a Labrador in her classroom, keeping the children calm through its presence – before such techniques for ‘at risk’ children were realized.

Nancy’s full name is Nancy Maude Dickinson Lee, and her daughter, Anne Maude Lee, will become the fourth generation of “Maude” in the family line.  The antique family name may not always be a favorite, Nancy shares, but with it comes a line of strong women – something to always be proud of.

Today, Nancy relishes her time with her students.  “I couldn’t stand a job where they put me at a desk and make me file something,” Nancy says.  What she enjoys about teaching art are the experiences that ‘they’ have in the classroom – Nancy and the students both.  “The kids are so funny and and smart and we just roll with it,” Nancy shares. “Junior high kids are ‘for reals’ — they tell it like it is — if you are doing something good they let you know … but if they don’t agree, they will not keep it a secret!”

Nancy received the Heart for Art Award, sponsored by Tribal Sportswear and presented by Fashion Crossroads in Downtown Casper.  She was awarded with a plaque and a $250 prize to purchase art supplies for her classroom.  Connect with our blog post about the award to read students’ recommendations of Nancy, and Fashion Crossroads owner Kyleen Stevenson-Braxton’s statement about Nancy and the award.  Offered for the first time by Tribal Sportswear, the Heart for Art award recognizes local art teachers that are making a different in the lives of junior high/middle school children.  Because children who are fostered in the education of art and the humanities often go on to careers in these fields, Tribal Sportswear found honoring those educators who make a different worthy of celebration.  Kyleen agrees, and hopes that the award will continue. Visit Fashion Crossroads for women’s fashions that span a variety of ages — from leisure to career wear — at 228 E. 2nd St. in Downtown Casper.

LANDER — Lander Art Center Searching for New Executive Director

With a mixture of apprehension and excitement, the Lander Art Center Board of Directors announces the resignation of Dannine Donaho as Executive Director: Apprehension because Dannine’s energy and expertise will be hugely missed and excitement for Dannine as she focuses on her art work more full-time.

Dannine has been involved with the Art Center for years. Prior to the position of Executive Director, Dannine filled many roles including volunteer, board member and program coordinator of the Native American Emerging Artist Training (NEAT) program. Her dedication to the Art Center and entrepreneurial energy has allowed the Art Center to develop our education, exhibition and artists training programs in ways that have uniquely served our community. Dannine has guided the Art Center into a position as an important visual art venue in Central Wyoming. Dannine has nurtured Lander’s vibrant community of artists as an advocate and mentor to aspiring, amateur and professional artists of all ages. We thank Dannine for her dedication to the Lander Art Center and the leadership role that she has played within our art community.

From Dannine:  I came into this job in 2010 as a working, aspiring artist, passionate about maintaining and expanding the art community in Lander.  In the past two years, I have learned intensively about non-profit art organization structure and challenges in addition to our community of artists— strengths and weaknesses.  It has been an assiduous and provoking time.

At the same time, I also learned quite a bit about myself.  By taking on the vast roles of leader and art advocate, I found a voice I didn’t know I possessed.  I believe in art in all its forms for all people.  Ironically, it is in finding this voice that I have decided to make a change and step down as the director.  I believe an artist, leader, and art advocate who has little time to make art cannot cultivate this vast project, the Lander Art Center, with integrity.  Losing one voice to gain another is worth it for a while, but not sustainable. I hope to stay involved, as there are many parts of the job I love that would fit nicely into my life.  And when time travel is available, I will be the first one in line for a ticket.

The Lander Art Center is excited to begin the search for a new director. Contact the Lander Art Center for job description and particulars.  We ask all of our community to assist us as we transition into new leadership. Specifically if you know of a potential candidate, pass them the job announcement.

‘Til Next Time…What a celebration of wonderful Wyoming women!
