from Putnam’s release…

“All the action and suspense of Box’s long string of high-country adventures, with a solution that’s considerably tighter and more satisfying than most of them. One of Joe’s best.” — Kirkus (starred review)

“Is there a crime-fiction family as fully fleshed out as Joe Pickett’s? Pickett’s supporting cast – wife Marybeth and daughters Sheridan, Lucy and April – lends a continuity and grounding to this series that sets it apart from all the lone-wolf stuff out there… As they often do, things get western, with the carefully constructed plot building to a breathless, thrilling end.” — Booklist

In 2014, the critics were unanimous about the Joe pickett thriller Stone Cold —

“C.J. Box moves from strength to strength with each new installment. I would say that he is at the top of his form, but the top just keeps moving ever upward.” — Bookpage

Now comes ENDANGERED, the new Joe Pickett novel which Putnam will publish on March 10, 2015 ($26.95). And with this 15th entry in the New York Times best-selling series, C.J. Box has done it again.

As the story opens, April, Joe Pickett’s 18-year-old daughter, has disappeared. Joe already had good reason to dislike rodeo champ Dallas Cates, but now he has even more of a case against him — Joe learns that it is Dallas with whom April had run off. And now she is missing.

Then comes even worse news:  the body of a girl has been found in a ditch along the highway – she’s alive, but just barely, the victim of blunt force trauma. That girl proves to be April, and the doctors don’t know if she’ll recover. Dallas denies having anything to do with it — says she ran off from him, too – and there’s evidence that points to another man. But Joe knows in his gut which person is responsible for bringing her to harm. What Joe doesn’t know is the kind of danger he’s about to encounter. Dallas Cates is bad enough, but Cates’s twisted family is like none Joe has ever met before. And they will do anything to protect Dallas – literally anything.

Joe’s going to find out  the truth, even if it kills him. And this time, it just might.

C.J. Box is the author of fifteen Joe Pickett novels, mos recently Stone Cold; four stand-alone novels, most recently The Highway; and the story collection Shots Fired. He has won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoes and Barry Awards, as well as the French Prix Calibre .38 and a French Elle magazine literary award. His books have been translated into 27 languages. C.J. Box lives outide Cheyenne, Wyoming

C.J. Box, SHOTS FIRED: Stories from Joe Pickett Country

We’re always excited to see a new book from C.J. Box arrive in our mail! We announced the debut of Box’s newest Joe Pickett novel, STONE COLD, in March, and now there is a new book of short stories from Box heading to stores in July 2014! Read on for more info from Putnam, Box’s publisher…

From New York Times-bestselling author C.J.Box comes SHOTS FIRED:  Stories from Joe Pickett Country, a memorable collection of crime and suspense stories about the Wyoming Box knows so well – and the dark deeds and impulses that can be found there.

Over fourteen Joe Pickett novels and four stand-alone books, C.J. Box has been consistently hailed for his brilliant storytelling and his extraordinary skills at creating character, suspense, and a deep sense of place. All of those strengths can be found in the ten riveting stories – three of them written especially for this book and never before published – that make up SHOTS FIRED, which Putnam will publish on July 15 ($26.95).

In “One-Car Bridge,” one of four Joe Pickett stories, Joe goes up against a “just plain mean” landowner, with disastrous consequences. In “Shots Fired,” his investigation into the radio call of the title nearly ends up being the last thing he ever does. In “Pirates of Yellowstone,” two Eastern Europeans, strangers in a strange land, hear that American tough guys can be ruthless — but it’s not till they try strong-arming one that they discover the real truth of the statement. And in “Le Sauvage Noble,” the stranger is Jimmy Two Bulls, a Lakota who takes a job in the Wild West Show at Disneyland Paris and finds its perks to be pleasant – good wages, decent food and French women who find his “noble savage” act to be pretty exotic. That is, until he meets Sophie. Then Jimmy finds out what “savage” really means.

Together these ten stories prove again what BookPage recently remarked about the Joe Pickett novels:  “I would say that he is at the top of his form, but the top just keeps moving ever upward.”

C.J. Box is the author of fourteen Joe PIckett novels, including the March 2014 entry STONE COLD, along with four stand-alone thrillers (for St. Martin’s). He has won the Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoe and Barry awards, as well as the French Prix Calibre .38, and has been an Edgar Award and Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist, all for the Pickett novels. Box has also won the Edgar Award for best novel for his first stand-alone, Blue Heaven. His books have been translated into 25 languages.

A Wyoming native, C.J. Box has worked on a ranch and as a small-town newspaper reporter and editor. He lives outside Cheyenne with his wife Laurie and their four horses.

I was thrilled to receive my copy of C.J. Box’s newest book, Stone Cold, published by Putnam. The 14th novel in Box’s acclaimed series about Wyoming game Joe Pickett, will publish on March 11. C.J. Box is a long-time resident of Wyoming – I was beyond thrilled to interview him for our Sprinter 2012 issue of WLM! A graduate of Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, and a reporter for the Saratoga Sun, C.J. Box discusses topics that are sympathetic to the west and Wyoming. “My goal is that with every book, readers are exposed to different points of view on controversial issues that they may not have known before,” Box said during our 2012 interview.

Critics call Box’s 2013 national bestseller Breaking Point “explosive” (South Florida Sun-Sentinel), “superlative” (The Cleveland Plain Dealer), “thrilling” (Publishers Weekly) and “exceptionally well-told” (USA Today).  Stone Cold puts Joe Pickett in the middle of an investigation of a mysterious new resident…

“In a distant part of Wyoming, a very rich stranger has settled in and built a virtual fortress for himself and his rather menacing staff. Located in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming, this grand estate poses a number of mysteries… Joe Picket, still officially a game warden, but now mostly a troubleshooter for Wyoming’s controversial Governor Rulon, is assigned to find out what the about the mystery man is. But as Joe investigates,  he soon realizes there is more to the situation than he’d anticipated…” Putnam Publishers

Loved by readers across Wyoming, the nation and world, C.J. Box continues to capture and hold readers’ attention through his suspenseful stories. Be sure to reserve your copy of Stone Cold at your favorite store!

Wyoming’s libraries highlighted on Snapshot Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 11 the state’s libraries will host Wyoming Snapshot Day, an event highlighting the importance of libraries to the state. More than 60 libraries will collect photos, comments and usage numbers to illustrate their impact every day of the year. Participating sites include public, school, special, community college and University of Wyoming libraries.

“Wyomingites love their libraries,” Susan Mark, Wyoming State Library statistics librarian said. “They use them to encourage their kids to read, to find a job, to further their education. Last year, circulation was well over 5 million. Wyoming public libraries alone typically have between 3 and 4 million visits and nearly a million computer uses a year. The typical school librarian sees every student in the building at least once a week.”

Many libraries will be taking pictures of their activities and asking patrons to fill out short survey forms and to provide comments. “Beyond the numbers, we really want people’s stories,” Mark said. “Whether it’s a child checking out a book for the first time, a high school student learning how to do research, or someone finding information on how to re-enter the workforce, we want to know how people are using our libraries.”

Wyoming residents can participate in Snapshot Day by visiting their local library and providing their comments. More information on the event, and a list of participating libraries may be found at http://wyomingsnapshot.weebly.com/.

Wyoming Snapshot Day is a project of the Wyoming State Library (WSL) and the Wyoming Library Association. For more information, contact Susan Mark, WSL statistics librarian at 307-777-5915 or susan.mark@wyo.gov.

Thank you to our fabulous Wyoming libraries and librarians who dedicate their time to enriching our lives in the Cowboy State!

Til Next Time…

Jackson Hole Author Lynn Friess Wins Gold 2011 “IPPY” Award

Picture book Western Lullaby takes a first place in Independent Publisher awards

Jackson, Wyoming – May 24, 2011 – A Jackson Hole picture book, Western Lullaby, written by Lynn Estes Friess and illustrated by Barbara Leonard Gibson (Mariposa Ranch Press, 2010), has won a gold medal in the national 2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards. Launched in 1996, the “IPPY” Awards are designed to bring increased recognition to deserving but often unsung titles from independent publishers.  Western Lullaby by Jackson Hole resident Lynn Friess took first place in the category of “Children’s Picture Books (7 & Under).”

Author Friess, a grandmother of 10 and avid art collector, wrote the award-winning Western Lullaby as a bedtime story focusing on the nocturnal sights and sounds of the West, combining the dreamy tale of a little cowgirl’s nighttime surroundings with vivid illustrations by Gibson of the Western outdoors.  An audio CD of the lullaby that inspired the book is included, performed by Wyoming singer-songwriter Marilee Gordon.

This year’s “IPPY” Awards presented gold, silver and bronze medals to winners in 69 national categories as well as regional awards and 12 Outstanding Books of the Year.  Western Lullaby tied for the gold in its category with Henry! You’re Late Again! by Mary Evanson Bleckwehl, illustrated by Brian Barber (Beaver’s Pond Press).  According to Independent Publisher, the 346 medal-winning books for 2011 came from a pool of 3,907 total entries, representing 45 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia, seven Canadian provinces, and seven countries overseas.  A full listing of the 2011 “IPPY” Award winners is available here on the Independent Publisher website.

Western Lullaby was the first picture book written by Friess, a close friend and supporter of the Jackson Hole-based National Museum of Wildlife Art.  In September 2010, Friess published her second picture book, Jackson Hole’s Carl Discovers Wildlife Art, illustrated by John Potter, and written as an engaging way to introduce children to wildlife art and the museum.  The Carl title is the first in a planned series, and proceeds from the book help sponsor programs, exhibits and operating support for the museum.
