The Sagebrush Community Arts Center is pleased to present the “Invitational Print Exhibition,” an exhibition comprised of nine local and out of state printmaking artists curated by Brittney Denham Whisonant. The exhibit will be open from March 15th to April 12th at the Sagebrush Community Art Center, located at 201 E. 5th Street, in Sheridan, Wyoming. There will be an opening reception Thursday, March 17th, 5-7 PM.
The exhibit is comprised of 30 works by Meagan Moore, Saegan Moran, Marty Azevedo, Keith Garubba, Alison Denyar, Jason Clark, Nancy Steele Makasci, Joel Oslind, and Steve Heil that display an array of processes and subject matter demonstrating the versatility in which printmaking as a medium can be utilized. From traditional techniques like intaglio, lithography, and silkscreen to digital printing, watercolor, and collage, the show as a whole serves as an overarching survey of printmaking.

Trailside Galleries is pleased to present its annual “Wildlife Discovery”, exhibition and sale featuring all new works from an outstanding group of nationally known artists who are inspired to paint all things wild! Jackson is the perfect setting for this show as the area is a virtual Mecca for wildlife enthusiasts including photographers, nature buffs and of course, wildlife artists! Many of the country’s most noted wildlife painters will participate in the event, bringing an eclectic mixture of wildlife and natural subjects from around the world including big game animals from the African savannah, North American mammals, as well as delicate birds and aquatic subjects. While the artists each bring their own unique interpretation of animals to their canvas, they all share a deep commitment to the preservation of wildlife and our natural world.
Participating artists include Bonnie Marris, Jan Martin McGuire, James Morgan, Ralph Oberg, Lindsay Scott, Renso Tamse, Adam Smith, Lori Forest, Sarah Woods and Dustin Van Wechel among others.
Wildlife art continues to be one of the most collected genres of art in the country. Given the heightened awareness of global warming and fragile ecosystems, the genre seems to have taken on a whole new dimension, as the artists strive not only to create an esthetically pleasing image, but to have it serve as an educational tool to bring more awareness to preservation.

Sagebrush Art Center is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Aaron Wuerker of Buffalo, WY. “Aaron Wuerker: Recent Landscapes,” will hang March 3-31 in the Sagebrush Community Art Center’s Invitational Gallery, located in the Historic train depot at 201 E. 5th St. in Sheridan. The public is invited to attend the Artist’s Reception on March 6th, from 5-7 PM.
Wuerker earned a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in 1992 and an MFA from Yale University in 1995. He and his wife Jenny, also a renowned artist, own the Crazy Woman Fine Art Gallery of Buffalo, WY. Wuerker states: “My work has continually returned to a realist vision of the landscape: I’m usually drawn to compositions where mechanized forms either mimic or contrast with the natural forms in the land.”

Lander: March Youth Art Month Celebrated at Lander Art Center
In celebration of March’s Youth Art Month, the Lander Art Center will once again host Lander Valley High School and Middle School Select Art Show opening next Friday, March 6th. This exhibition displays selected works by local youth artists in a wide range of art mediums such as drawing, painting, pastel, mixed media, ceramics and digital art.
The Student Select Show remains a favorite in the community as it showcases the incredible skill and creative expression of young students. Their work is a reminder of the freshness art can embody and be an inspiration to us all. Students are lead by Middle School instructor Melissa Scherr; High School art instructors Jason Dayton, Shawna Pickenpaugh, and Zach Even.
A public reception will be held next Friday, March 6th from 6-8pm at the Lander Art Center. Lander Art Center openings are free and open to the public. Complimentary drinks and appetizers are provided.

Plein Air Painters at Natl Elk Refuge Visitor Center May 13
A group of painters will use the backdrop of the National Elk Refuge as artistic inspiration on Tuesday, May 13, giving visitors an opportunity to watch and ask questions as the artists create their works.
The artists are part of the Teton Plein Air Painters, a group of artists who meet once a week from May – October in the Teton environs. Starting with two people during the summer of 2012, the group now has a communication list of over seventy. Typically, three to ten people are onsite to paint, referencing the landscape for motifs. Art mediums include oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pen and ink.
The group will spread out in the area of the visitor center, located at 532 N. Cache Street in Jackson. Weather permitting, likely locations will include the visitor center lawn, the covered upper deck of the facility, and the remote viewing deck across the lawn next to the wetlands area. Current visitor center hours are from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, but visitors are welcome to stroll through the grounds after hours to enjoy the art session.
En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is used to describe painting done in an outdoor setting. The artists paint natural light, using color to define form. Depending on the light and weather, plein air paintings are generally done in one session. Artists may add final touches to their work once back in the studio. MOOSE, WY —For the past 39 years, artisans from diverse American Indian tribes have demonstrated their traditional and contemporary art forms in Grand Teton National Park. This annual program provides visitors a chance to gain greater appreciation and understanding of Indian cultures that are still alive and active today.
Participating artists demonstrate and share the cultural traditions of their tribes through art forms such as painting, weaving, pottery, beadwork, and musical instruments. Guest artists exhibit daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Colter Bay Visitor Center. Artists also offer their finished items for purchase.

This week we are featuring North Wind Fiber Arts of Lusk, WY
Lynne Boas started as an art major in college and then became interested in microbiology. Her goal was to make a living creating art; however, the bills needed to be paid so she pursued a degree in bacteriology from the University of Idaho. She has worked in research and development for about 16 years. Lynne left the fast pace corporate world and moved to Wyoming to pursue a more relaxed lifestyle to explore and create fiber art.
Lynne started painting silk scarves after a friend sent her a beautiful scarf as a birthday gift. It was not hand painted but stamped. She started thinking about silk scarves and what could be done with them. As luck would have it, scarves again became a popular clothing accessory. Lynne learned about the art of silk painting and started dabbling. She then took a silk painting class from an accomplished silk painter in the area and is still learning new techniques. There are so many things she would like to try, and she really enjoys the colors and the feel of the silk.
Lynne finds silk to be a fascinating fiber. Not only are silk scarves a beautiful enhancement to an outfit; they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The shimmering appearance of silk is due to its triangular prism-like structure of the fiber which refracts incoming light at different angles producing different colors on silk that is not dyed. During the Roman Empire, silk was sold for its weight in gold.
Her inspiration comes from the colors she sees in the environment, which includes everything from rocks to what people mix together and wear. She does like splashes of bright colors to brighten things up, especially in the winter. Sunsets and rises, and the color variations in bodies of water, greens to dark blue, etc., are other great inspirations.
She is expanding her product line to include wool products, which she has been working with for over 20 years. Working with the multiple mediums is why the company is called “fiber arts.” Lynne also spins, dyes, weaves and knits different wools and other fibers when time allows.

Diana has always loved art and creating beautiful things. She took art classes all though high school, winning awards for her serigraphs (silk screening process). Then careers happened and art got left behind. Before retiring, Diana found an oil painting class through Cheyenne Parks and Recreation and got hooked on painting in her first class. Diana decided to take some art classes when she retired to see if she still had any talent. She switched to acrylics and water based mediums because they offer unlimited potential to create special effects in her work. Some very special paintings developed from simply wondering what else she could do with her materials and experimenting with them.
Diana creates original, realistic landscape paintings from wide plains panoramas to mountains, forests, deserts and caves. Her work comes in a variety of sizes and color palettes to suit any taste and decor. She also created a special Cave Series where the viewer feels as though they are standing in a cave looking outward. Diana also paints on both sides of a piece of glass – the background on the back side and the foreground on the front.
Midnight Magic
The uniqueness of Diana’s work can include thin to very thick applications of pastes that create thick textures up to one inch above the canvas or “crack” in unique ways. She also use various paint mediums like sand, fibers, flakes and mica for interesting textures. These painting mediums create their own shadows for interesting and unusual effects. For subtle sparkle, sheen, and shifting color depending on your angle of view, Diana uses iridescent, metallic and interference paint and additives. Several paintings have won awards in various art shows. Prices depend on size and materials, and generally run from $75.00 to $500.00, plus appropriate taxes and shipping if needed.

This week we are featuring NM Works of Cheyenne, by artist Nancy McCalla
Nancy McCalla is a Wyoming native, raised on a farm along the Platte River between Glenrock and Casper. Growing up, she was an avid “rock hound,” always carting around a box of rocks. She found meaning, companionship and solace in the stones. In 1976 Nancy moved to Cheyenne and began a 35 year career working for the Wyoming State Government. In 2004, she attended a metal working class at Laramie County Community College. It was a revelation! Metal met stone and she discovered an entirely new and exciting world.
In 2010 Nancy retired from state government and started her jewelry/art design business. During the 35 years she worked for the state, Nancy spent a lot of time listening to people say to her, “Oh you work for the state, why don’t you get a real job?” So her new enterprise became NM Works – sort of her way of declaring that she now has a “real” job! Nancy feels very lucky to have had a rewarding long term career that ultimately helped her discover her passion to create and to be able to pursue it, and she hope others are as fortunate.
Nancy wants her work to directly reflect Wyoming’s western heritage and our state’s natural beauty. Each piece starts with a concept or insight that she wants to share with others. Sometimes the concept is inspired by the materials she uses – stones, metal, leather, gourds. Nancy always wants her pieces to allow others to see the materials used in a new and different way.
Nancy likes to combine wearable art, with non-wearable art. A small gourd bowl serves as a decorative storage/display piece for the pendant and earrings from the “Hoop Dancer” series. She enjoys combining natural materials such as gourds, shells, feathers, etc., with metal and finished and/or rough stones.
Nancy works with brass, copper, sterling silver and 14/20 karat gold filled metals. She uses both precious and semi-precious stones and cabochons in her pieces. Some of the precious stones used include faceted black diamonds and blue diamonds; un-faceted or raw cognac and grey diamonds, and sapphires. Some of the semi-precious stones used include: garnet, turquoise, jasper, agate, jade and amber. She also uses: gourds, leather, shells, feathers, elk ivory.

LARAMIE: ALWAYS A COWBOY8K/5K SEPTEMBER 22: The Wyoming cross country teams will participate in the 11th annual “Always a Cowboy” 8k run/5k walk Saturday at 9 a.m. at Undine Park in Laramie.
The event is an annual race held in memory of the eight Wyoming cross country student-athletes whose lives were taken on September 16, 2001. Undine Park is located at 5th Street and Ord in Laramie.
Prizes will be awarded, and everyone has a chance to win raffle prizes. Entrance fees are $20 before 5 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 19, and $25 after the 19th leading up to the race. A registration form is available — click here.
All proceeds are donated to the University of Wyoming cross country and track and field programs.

CASPER: CELTIC CULTURAL EXHIBITION & IRISH DANCE FESTIVAL AUGUST 24-25
The Irish Dance Association of Central Wyoming will host an evening of Irish culture, featuring Celtic musicians from the Casper area and performances by Anne Ellis Donovan, world qualifier and championship Irish dancer. Selected dancers from the Richens/Timm Academy of Irish Dance will also perform. Donovan has performed for many years at the Dublin, Ohio, Irish Festival, one of the top Irish Festivals in the US. The festival includes the 22nd Annual Rocky Mountain Regional Fiddle Championships, and the 1st Annual Arts and Crafts Show and Sale. Arts & Crafts opens along with the music competition, which includes numerous nationally certified fiddle categories, including guitar, variety instrument, female and male vocals. This tour will emphasize how prostitution facilitated the economic growth and development of Laramie City. The tour will begin at the 1st Street Plaza, move east to Grand News Stand (the site of the Grover Institute—Christy Grover’s elaborate Victorian brothel), then move north along the front street architecture (specifically designed to facilitate retail businesses on the ground level, with the small side entrances, leading to staircases for brothels on the second floor level). The tour will end at Second Story Books for a good look at the original brothel rooms, now used in the bookstore. The Lander Art Center Board of Directors is please to announce the appointment of Lisa Hueneke as the new executive director of the Lander Art Center, beginning in Sepetmber 2012.
Ms. Hueneke brings over five years of nonprofit experience including one year as the Lander Art Center Program Coordinator. Ms. Hueneke has worked for nonprofits both nationally and internationally including with the Academy for Educational Development (Washington, DC), Wilderness Medical Institute (Lander, WY), Octagon Center for the Arts (Ames, IW), T.F. Chen Art and Culture Center Foundation (New York, NY), and Museo Tanga Tanga delos Niños (Sucre, Bolivia). Additionally Ms. Hueneke’s received a Bachelors of Arts in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Science in International Studies from Iowa State University.
As Executive Director, Ms. Hueneke will be responsible for the daily operation of the Lander Art Center including the education and exhibition programming, professional artist development programming, community outreach, and financial management. Her leadership and vision will guide the implementation the Lander Art Center’s strategic goals. “I am honored by this opportunity to serve such an important organization and creative community. It is an exciting time to be involved in the arts here in Lander,” noted Ms. Hueneke.
The Lander Art Center is a leader in Fremont County’s art community. The Lander Art Center provides access to art through education programming including over 45 classes and workshops per year in a variety of visual arts including drawing, painting, pastels, jewelry, ceramics, sculpting, printmaking and related techniques, and fiber arts for preschool, youth, and adults. The Lander Art Center annually hosts between 8-12 art exhibitions of regional, national and international artists that include three to five juried exhibitions in amateur to professional categories. Additionally the Lander Art Center’s professional artist programming includes an Artist in Residence Program, two art fairs (Riverfest Art in the Park on July 21, 2012 and Art in the Afternoon Holiday Art Sale), the Native Emerging Arts Training Program, Exhibition Proposal Program, High School Intern Program, and Summer Assistant Instructor Program.

The 32nd annual Red Dersert Audubon Wildlife Art Show opens April 6, 6-8 pm, at the Lander Art Center.
