About 15 years ago Lori Martin owned a candy store. Perry and Lori met when he was searching for Mint Meltaways and found them and much more. Eventually, when the opportunity presented itself, they opened a new store. Perry loves to cook so it was an easy transition into making candies.

He practiced every holiday until they were able to open the store. Lori & Perry have been in business for four years: one year selling wholesale and three years with the retail store.

PerrBear Chocolates has an assortment of chocolates, truffles, fudge, toffee, caramels, nut brittles, candy bars, toffee popcorn and cheese popcorn. NEWS FROM THE PARKS: Avalanche Victim Recovered

Avalanche Victim’s Body Recovered from Survey Peak in Teton Range

MOOSE, WY— Grand Teton National Park rangers were able to recover the body of Nick Gillespie, age 30, of Jackson, Wyoming from Berry Creek canyon at 5 p.m. on January 28. Foggy conditions throughout most of Monday prevented earlier attempts to complete the mission before late afternoon. Rangers also concluded their investigation of the avalanche event that took his life on Sunday afternoon. Gillespie, a long-time seasonal employee of Grand Teton, was caught in an avalanche on the southeast face of Survey Peak (elevation 9,277 feet) at approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, and he died as a result of injuries suffered in the slide.

Gillespie and three companions skied into Berry Creek canyon in the northern Teton Range on Thursday, January 24, intending to do a multi-day backcountry ski trip. On Sunday afternoon, Gillespie and one companion skied a run on the southeast face of Survey Peak. They then returned with a third member of their party to ski a final run. During that final run, the group planned to ski at one-minute intervals and fan out across the treed slopes. Gillespie was the last person to ski, and is believed to have triggered the avalanche that caught him. Gillespie was carried approximately 220 feet into trees where he was pinned and left partially buried with his head and one arm above the snow. The total slide path spanned 540 feet. The second skier encountered fresh avalanche debris, and believing that the first skier may have triggered it, immediately initiated a beacon search. He also called out and heard the first skier respond from below. He skied down to the first skier and learned that she was unaware of the avalanche. He then immediately skinned back of the slope to search with his avalanche beacon for Gillespie, and located him about 20 minutes after the accident occurred. He initiated CPR, and was eventually joined by the two other members of the party. In total, they performed CPR for approximately 1 ½ hours with no success.

Due to the remote area and spotty cell service, Gillespie’s companions were not able to make an emergency call for help until late evening. Teton Interagency Dispatch Center received notice of the incident at 9 p.m. on Sunday. Because of the late hour and confirmation that Gillespie did not revive during CPR, rangers made arrangements to recover Gillespie’s companions and his body during daylight hours on Monday, January 28. The surviving party of three stayed the night in a National Park Service patrol cabin located about one mile from Survey Peak.

Four rangers were flown into Berry Creek canyon at 11 a.m. Monday and two of the skiers were flown out during the single flight. Deteriorating weather conditions halted additional flights until late afternoon when Gillespie’s body plus one of his partners and all rescue personnel were flown out of the backcountry just before nightfall.

The avalanche danger on Sunday, January 27 was listed as low for mid-elevation terrain. The crown of the avalanche on Survey Peak occurred at 8,405 feet.

Rangers recommend that backcountry users get the latest avalanche conditions and monitor both local weather and changing snow conditions. Backcountry users should also be prepared for all aspects of backcountry travel and travel with others, plus carry basic avalanche equipment such as a shovel, avalanche probe, avalanche beacon, and first aid kit. The Sagebrush Community Art Center proudly presents “Living With Art,” an exhibition of art from around the world, acquired and exhibited by local artist and philanthropist, Neltje.

The show opened on January 15, and runs through February 24. The opening reception took place January 17, and was open to the public.

I hope the community will enjoy seeing the diversity of my mind.”

Big Sky Trail

Diana has always loved art and creating beautiful things. She took art classes all though high school, winning awards for her serigraphs (silk screening process). Then careers happened and art got left behind. Before retiring, Diana found an oil painting class through Cheyenne Parks and Recreation and got hooked on painting in her first class. Diana decided to take some art classes when she retired to see if she still had any talent. She switched to acrylics and water based mediums because they offer unlimited potential to create special effects in her work. Some very special paintings developed from simply wondering what else she could do with her materials and experimenting with them.

Diana creates original, realistic landscape paintings from wide plains panoramas to mountains, forests, deserts and caves. Her work comes in a variety of sizes and color palettes to suit any taste and decor. She also created a special Cave Series where the viewer feels as though they are standing in a cave looking outward. Diana also paints on both sides of a piece of glass – the background on the back side and the foreground on the front.

Midnight Magic

The uniqueness of Diana’s work can include thin to very thick applications of pastes that create thick textures up to one inch above the canvas or “crack” in unique ways. She also use various paint mediums like sand, fibers, flakes and mica for interesting textures. These painting mediums create their own shadows for interesting and unusual effects. For subtle sparkle, sheen, and shifting color depending on your angle of view, Diana uses iridescent, metallic and interference paint and additives. Several paintings have won awards in various art shows. Prices depend on size and materials, and generally run from $75.00 to $500.00, plus appropriate taxes and shipping if needed.

J-M Creations LLC was started in Cheyenne in 1985. Marilyn and June enjoyed each other’s company and doing crafts, so they decided to start a business together.

J-M Creations creates western souvenirs and Christmas ornaments. Once they have an idea, they start looking for the materials, such as wood, beads, yarn, rope, horse hair or hay. They also create some witty gifts such as Cowboy Bubble Bath (a boot shaped bag with beans), Cowboy Toothpicks (a small boot with nails) as two examples.

Michael Walock was born and raised in North Dakota where hunting, fishing, trapping, camping and outdoor recreation is the way of life. He began fishing at the age of two with his father and has continued for 57 years to date and plans to continue. Back then fishing rods and reels, tackle and lures were not as modern as they are today. Michael and his father made several lures from wood or whatever they could find. Fishing in Canada once, losing most of what little tackle he had, Michael made a spinner from a pop top can, which worked great. Many times they could not afford bait nor did they have nets to seine minnows, but they could always dig worms. Michael started to experiment with bottle caps in 1972 but could not get the cap to spin.

In 1979, Michael move to Casper, where his interests in fishing, hunting etc. became anew due to the state of Wyoming’s beauty, and the game and fish that abound here. He again started to work on the cap lure and in 2010 Michael perfected the lure while providing an outlet to recycle bottle caps. Michael’s wife and son assist in all aspects of this family oriented business, in which the Walock family takes great pride.

All the lures are functional and some people just collect them. The lures have caught many fish including the trout pictured on their web site. They can be used with live bait and at various depths with sinkers. There is no other lure like them in the world. The lures are original and patented; and there is the added bonus of recycling the caps. Customers can also place custom orders.

Jenny & Sam Dowd met as students at Kansas State University in the ceramics studio. They traded phone numbers written in pieces of clay. They both have always been drawn to working with their hands, and each had experiences with clay as children, which stuck with them. As they moved around the country they always set up some sort of studio, but Alpine, Wyoming is the first place the Dowd’s studio in their home feels permanent.

Dowd House Studios is known for their utilitarian pottery. They like to make pottery that can be used every day but also for special occasions. Sam carves or brushes animals onto his pieces which can be very whimsical and, of course, one of a kind. From the fish of the region to dinosaurs, birds and deep-sea fish, they strive to create a piece of art in each of their pots, hoping that the customer will enjoy the experience as much as the Dowds did making the pieces.

The Dowds welcome custom orders and commission of projects. They enjoy projects that can be personalized for their customers. Jenny and Sam work with a few Jackson hotels. They created water pitchers for the Wort Hotel and the Four Seasons in Teton Village, as examples.
