The holidays are upon us! Looking for something to do New Year’s Eve? Check out First Night Casper!  This family-friendly event is organized by the 1224 Club, a Casper community resource built around recovery.  See the paragraph at the bottom of this post for more information on the 1224 Club!

Started in Boston in 1976, the First Night program is a drug- and alcohol-free, family-friendly arts & culture celebration. Today, the program is a licensed event, occurring internationally. The First Night program is held in communities throughout the United States — the closest locations to the Casper program are Fort Collins, CO and Missoula, MT.

The program is simple:  Purchase a button for admission to LOTS of events, entertainment, and fun city-wide!  Buttons cost $10 each for adults; children 5 and under are free with a paying adult.  In Casper, purchase buttons at the Nicolaysen Art Museum, Downtown Development Authority, Messy Moose, Mercer Family Resource Center, Chamber of Commerce and the 1224 Club.  The theme for the First Night program changes annually — this year, the theme is ‘Reflections’.  Buttons have become collector’s items, with new designs and new themes every year — in addition to buttons, First Night Casper will offer logo apparel and other souvenir items for sale.

Once you have your buttons, get ready to have some fun!  Click here to connect with the First Night Casper activity schedule — or visit www.1224club.org and click on the ‘First Night Casper’ link, then the schedule link.  Check out their awesome sponsors while you’re at it! Thanks to Ken Knight Photography who has graciously offered photography services for the evening as well.

The buttons are your admission into the whole series of events — the 10 locations for fun include:  MC Market, 2nd Street Community Area, First United Methodist Church, Yellowstone Garage, WY National Apartments Lobby, The Downtown Grille, Nicolaysen Art Museum, Children’s Theater, The Science Zone and the 1224 Club.  Attendees may visit the locations in any order they wish — allowing them to create their own map to fun for the evening. Each location contains its own form of entertainment — musicians, illusionists, comedians, art galleries, dance performances, theater, play and discovery space for the kids — there is a LOT to take in! Visit food vendors at the 2nd Street Community Area and take part in an inexpensive chili dinner at the First United Methodist Church.  Be sure to check out First Night Casper for a fun and substance-free, culturally-rich event for the entire family!

The 1224 Club was formed almost 20 years ago by a group of nine recovering alcoholics. They derived their unique name from the 12 step programs and the 24 hour a day work that it requires to overcome addiction.  An organization unique to Casper, the community resource is built around recovery from addiction.  While they serve occasionally as a facility for 12 step program meetings, the 1224 Club is not a 12 step program in itself.  The club does not employ counselors, but does provide free resources in a safe and anonymous environment open to all individuals seeking recovery from addiction.  The club also provides its facilities for a wide variety of other addiction groups as well.  The 1224 Club is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) entity, funded primarily by donations and grants through gracious corporations and foundations.  The proceeds from First Night Casper will go to benefit the 1224 Club.  For more information on the organization and the services they provide to the Casper area, visit www.1224club.org.

Thank you to The 1224 Club for sharing what they do as well as providing such a valuable and welcoming service to the Casper area.  Visit their website to see how you can help, donate and support their service — and be sure to attend First Night Casper for a fun and unique event for the entire family!

Wyoming State Capitol Chanukah Celebration

Thank you to Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming for sending us this information on the State Capitol’s Chanukah Celebration! You can learn more about Wyoming’s Jewish community in our upcoming winter issue of Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine — in the meantime, mark your calendars to attend this important event!

10-FOOT MENORAH TO LIGHT UP STATE CAPITOL BUILDING, AS PART OF WORLD’S LARGEST CHANUKAH OBSERVANCE

Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming to Light Up One of 10,000 Public Menorahs Worldwide, Symbolizing Universal Message of Religious Freedom

WHAT:

Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming, based in Jackson but serving Jewish Wyomingites across the State, will ignite a public 10-foot menorah erected at the State Capitol Building, followed by a community-wide celebration on the 7th day of Chanukah, Tuesday, December 27, 2011. The ceremony will feature Chanukah songs from the Montessori School of Cheyenne children’s choir, Menorah kindling with beloved Holocaust survivor siblings Zolly Gancz and Hellen Zigmond and greetings from community leaders and elected officials.  Following the menorah lighting ceremony, many will dance, sing and eat delicious Chanukah treats such as potato latkes and jelly doughnuts.

The public menorah lighting was organized by Chabad Rabbi Zalman Mendelsohn, Executive Director of the Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming, who remarked, “The Menorah serves as a symbol of Wyoming’s dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship G-d freely, openly, and with pride.  Specifically in America, a nation that was founded upon and vigorously protects the right of every person to practice his or her religion free from restraint and persecution, the Menorah takes on profound significance, embodying both religious and constitutional principles.”

Shira Michaels from Cheyenne, who is looking forward to attending the public menorah lighting commented, “I want my kids to grow up with pride in their Jewish heritage and a feeling of equality and self-confidence as an American. Chabad’s Chanukah Menorahs are arguably one of the most important developments ever to help my child’s education. I wish they had this where I grew up.”

The Capitol menorah is one of thousands of large public menorahs sponsored by Chabad throughout the world, helping children and adults of all walks of life discover and enjoy the holiday message.

Throughout the State of Wyoming, Chabad will be presenting scores of Chanukah events and celebrations, including public menorah lightings, public menorah displays, joyous Chanukah parties and more. To find a local event in Wyoming or practically anywhere throughout the world, visit www.JewishWyoming/ChanukahEvents. For more information about Chanukah and a local schedule of events, visit JewishWyoming.com/Chanukah.

GREAT PHOTO AND VIDEO OPPS!!

WHEN:

Tuesday, December 27, 2011; 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.

WHERE:

State Capitol Building, 200 West 24th Street, Cheyenne, WY; West Hallway

WHY:

Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls the victory – more than 2,200 years ago – of a militarily weak, but spiritually strong, Jewish people over the mighty forces of a ruthless enemy that had overrun the Holy Land and threatened to engulf the land and its people in darkness.

The miraculous victory of religious freedom was compounded by a second great miracle that took place when only one jug of sacred oil was found still pure and sealed.  The Maccabees poured the one-day supply of oil into the great Menorah and rekindled the Menorah that had been desecrated and extinguished by the enemy.  The small amount of oil did not burn out at the end of the first day, but continued to burn continuously for eight days, until the special process for preparing new oil could be completed.

Lighting the Chanukah Menorah reminds us of these events and also serves as a universal symbol and a cosmopolitan message of triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of right over might, of light over darkness. This crucial message is at the heart of every Wyomingites’ and every Americans’ hope for better days ahead.

Chanukah Low-Fat Potato Latke Recipe

· 3 teaspoons vegetable oil, preferably canola

· 2 pounds russet potatoes (about 4 or 5), peeled

· 3/4 cup finely chopped red onion (about 1 medium onion)

· 1/4 cup all-purpose white flour

· 1 teaspoon salt

· 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

· 1 large egg, lightly beaten

· 1 large egg white, lightly beaten

Set oven racks at middle and lower positions of the oven. Preheat oven to 450° F. Prepare 2 baking sheets by brushing with 1 teaspoon oil on each sheet.

Grate potatoes using hand grater or shredding blade of food processor. Place in a large bowl and add onions, flour, salt and pepper; toss to mix well. Add egg, egg white and remaining 1 teaspoon oil; toss to mix.

Drop onto prepared cookie sheets by the tablespoonful and press lightly to form cakes. Bake for 10 minutes, or until golden brown on the bottom. Flip latkes, switch position of baking sheets, and bake about 5 more minutes, or until golden brown.

Transfer to a platter, arranging browned-side up, and serve with no-fat sour cream or applesauce, or both. May be made ahead and stored overnight in fridge. Reheat at 350° F for 10 minutes. Makes about 24 latkes.

Tip: Use the grater attachment of a food processor to simultaneously grate both the potatoes and the onion. Set the shredded material in a colander over a bowl to catch the dripping liquid. When the grated potato-onion mixture stops squishing combine with the egg, egg white and remaining teaspoon of oil as above. Carefully pour out the liquid collected from under the grated potatoes and onions, taking care to save the white cake which has formed at the bottom of the bowl (the potato starch). Add this white stuff to the latke mixture and mix well. Complete the above recipe as written.

At WLM, we strive to appreciate all walks of life, and are proud of our history as The Equality State. Thank you to the Wyoming state government for recognizing this important event!

Have you purchased your Mistletoe Mosey button in Downtown Laramie yet? You can learn more about the program in our upcoming winter issue of Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine, but in the meantime, here’s some information about one of Dowtown Laramie’s energetic and successful programs that links the business owners together, as well as with the community!

Primed for an enthusiastic repeat of 2010’s success, the Mistletoe Mosey was launched on Black Friday (November 25) and will run until 6 PM on December 23.  The program is simple, and a lot of fun:  purchase a button with your favorite number on it, and search through 50 participating businesses (see the list in this blog; buttons can be purchased for $5 at any of these businesses).  Match the number on your button to the number displayed at one of the stores for a chance to win a $50 prize!  You’ll also be entered into a drawing for $1,000 in downtown gift certificates.  The Grand Prize Drawing will take place at the First Street Plaza in Downtown Laramie on December 24 at 11 AM.  Businesses will also be offering extended hours on Tuesdays during December – shop until 7 PM on these days for extra time to search for that number! Participating is easy and fun – plus you can take care of your holiday shopping and support the local economy at the same time.

As a thank you for shopping local, bring your gifts to the Laramie Main Street Alliance office at 207 Grand Avenue for FREE gift wrapping December 10 through 23, Monday through Saturday, 2 to 6 PM and December 24, 10 to 1 PM.

The Mistletoe Mosey is just one of the ways that Downtown Laramie celebrates the holidays.  The annual window decorating contest brings out the creativity in the local merchants; this year’s theme is ‘A Gem City Starlight Christmas’.  A nod to Laramie’s nickname, ‘Gem City of the Plains,’ the theme also extends to the annual Christmas parade as well.  “Pull out your decorations, find some creative helpers and go wild with lights!” encourages Laramie Main Street Alliance.  Judging will take place December 1 from 4:30-6 PM, and winners announced after the parade on December 2 from the First Street Plaza. Categories include:  Best Use of Theme, Most Original, Creative Use of Merchandise, Best Design, Most Welcoming, and Best Overall Design.

Be sure to visit Downtown Laramie on Facebook and if you’re in Laramie, get your button today! Whether you’re in Laramie or not, remember to SHOP LOCALLY and give your friends & neighbors your business whenever you can this  holiday season!

Trio Artists Take Flight in December Group Exhibition to Benefit Teton Raptor Center

Jackson, WY – Just in time for the holidays,Trio Fine Art will be hosting a show inspired by our fine feathered friends.  Entitled “Flight,” the show came about as a result of all four gallery artists’ affinity for birds.  The title reflects not only the subject of the exhibition but the artistic aspirations of the participants: Jennifer L. Hoffman, Lee Carlman Riddell, Kathryn Mapes Turner, and September Vhay.

The gallery will partner with the TetonRaptorCenter(www.tetonraptorcenter.org) for the exhibit; a percentage of all the sales from the exhibition will be donated to the center, and Roger Smith will be on hand at the reception to talk about the RaptorCenter’s activities.  One of the center’s resident birds will also be in attendance.  The show will open on December 8 with a reception from 5-8 PMand will hang through December 31.

From the Artists’ Perspective

Kathryn Mapes Turner, “Her Wingspan”; oil on linen, 24×24″

Kathryn Mapes Turner: “My passion for birds started at a very early age when my father, a trained ornithologist, was rehabilitating raptors in our backyard. In the 1970’s and early 1980’s, the Wyoming Game and Fish would send him bald and golden eagles that had been poisoned or shot by ranchers and it was miraculous to see these magnificent birds reclaim their health over a period of time and then be released in flight.  As a young girl, it gave me a unique opportunity to learn about these birds — study their form and behavior. In art, birds can represent so many things such as strength, lightness, grace, beauty.  I enjoy incorporating the expressive quality of birds in my imagery.”

Jennifer L. Hoffman, “December”; conte & charcoal on davey board, 8×10″

Jennifer L. Hoffman:  “From watching my grandfather building birdfeeders in his basement, to identifying birds at our family cabin, to hiking through the Hawai’ian rainforest in search of endangered native honeycreepers, birds have played an important role in my life for as long as I can remember.   I even met Lee Riddell at a “bird sit” with naturalist Bert Raynes many years back.  I am inspired by the grace, the gesture, the incredible strength and instinctual drive of birds.  I have sketched their forms as long as I’ve been drawing, and they occasionally make appearances in my landscapes.  I’m excited to put more focus on them for this show.  I’m also delighted by the opportunity to support theTetonRaptorCenter.  Not only do they do phenomenal work rehabilitating injured birds, but their dedication to education and community outreach is fantastic.  What a special place to have right here in our little valley.”

Lee Carlman Riddell, “Calliope Hummingbirds, August 2″; oil on linen, 8×6”

Lee Carlman Riddell: Lee Carlman Riddell’s love of birds came from her parents … her Dad planted the flowers that attracted the birds to their yard, and her Mom taught her to recognize the bird’s songs. Recently a Calliope hummingbird nested outside Lee’s studio window and she was able to draw and paint the mother and two chicks as they grew up. She is forever grateful for this time spent with the hummingbird family.  Lee is a long-time supporter of theTetonRaptorCenter. Years ago, when Roger Smith and Margaret Creel cared for injured raptors in their back yard, Lee and her husband Ed would make a contribution so they could buy frozen mice for the birds’ dinners. She is proud of Roger and Margaret and all those who helped make the official home for injured raptors a reality.

September Vhay, “Lavender Mist”; oil on linen, 7.5 x 12″

September Vhay:

“The very idea of birds is a symbol of the soul, representing a passage between the physical and the spiritual. I have had a life long love affair with them which began one summer at the age of fifteen while driving an old truck along a stretch of alfalfa fields.  A curious American Kestrel flew alongside the open drivers window for about fifty yards.  I was awestruck and hooked for life.”

Trio Fine Art is located at 545 N Cache St., across the street from the visitors’ center.  The gallery is open Thursday – Saturday from 12-6 during the run of the exhibition.  For additional information, please visit www.triofineart.com and the artists’ individual websites: www.jlhoffmanfineart.com, www.leeriddell.com, www.turnerfineart.com, and www.vhay.com.

Thanks to the Niobrara Conservation District for sending us this awesome information!  All images of the kids at work & finished products are compliments of the Niobrara Conservation District.

The Niobrara Conservation District in Lusk is trying to obtain grant funding from Pepsi for a recycling trailer built by the students of Niobrara County High School. The structure of this grant contest is such that 100+ projects have been submitted; now it is up to the communities’ support to cast votes in favor of their project!  After the top 20 projects will be finalists for the monetary award. Currently Niobrara is ranked at #65. As I am sure you know, Niobrara County is the least populated county in this Great State, so obtaining many votes is a challenge. I know it would be greatly appreciated if Niobrara County could call upon the entire State of Wyoming to cast some votes for the remainder of the month of November. Votes can be cast daily via phone text (send to 73774 message 109190), and by following this link, creating an account and signing in to vote http://www.refresheverything.com/niobrararecycles . The sign up is free and there is no obligation to receive any other information from Pepsi.

Hey Wyoming, let’s help these guys out! What a neat idea!  For questions, contact Lisa Shaw with the Niobrara County Conservation District in Lusk: 307-334-2953 ext 101.

The Doo House and Black Dog Animal Rescue Team Up for $1.00

Laramie/Cheyenne, WY – Southeast Wyoming’s premiere pet waste removal and pet services company has partnered with Southeast Wyoming’s premiere no kill animal shelter for just $1.00.

The Doo House – Pet Waste Removal and Pet Services has partnered with Black Dog Animal Rescue (BDAR) in hopes that everyone will donate just $1.00 in the first ever “Donate a $1.00 to the Dogs” campaign to support Black Dog Animal Rescue.

This idea is the brainchild of Matthew Blaylock, owner of The Doo House in Laramie, WY. “I believe what Black Dog Animal Rescue does is extremely important and want to support it anyway I can,” Blaylock said. “We at The Doo House try and do something for charity every year over the holidays and doing something for animals just felt natural, so I sent an email, made a phone call and poof an idea came together.”

It was natural fit for a pet waste removal and pet services company to look to dogs to raise money as they are cleaning up after them daily.  The goal of the whole fundraiser is not to break anyone’s bank; that is the reason for only asking for $1.00. If everyone that reads or hears about this donates just $1.00 it is hard to tell how much could be raised!

“When The Doo House approached us with this idea, we were really excited,” said Britney Wallesch, founder and president of Black Dog Animal Rescue. “We’re excited about the opportunity to work with a company in Laramie and host a big event there. The community has always been very welcoming and we think this will help us save a lot of dogs.”

The “Donate a $1.00 to the Dogs” fundraiser officially kicked off on October 8, 2011 but is just now getting into full swing.

You can donate to this great cause by going to www.wepay.com and searching it out or by clicking the provided link https://www.wepay.com/donate/156034?ref=widget&utm_medium=widget&utm_campaign=donation.  Learn more about Black Dog Animal Rescue at: http://www.bdar.org/.  Learn more about the Doo House in Laramie at:  http://www.thedoohouse.info/.

If you do not have access to a computer you can also mail a donation to:

The Doo House

P.O. Box 2093

Laramie, WY 82073

All checks can be made out to The Doo House just put in the memo line “Donate a $1.00 to the Dogs.”

The fundraiser will officially end December 31, 2011 but to cap it all off the Black Dog Animal Rescues with The Doo House will hold an adopt-a-thon in Laramie, WY on January 14, 2012 where a check will be presented to the Black Dog Animal rescue. More info will be released in the near future.

About the Black Dog Animal Rescue: Based in Cheyenne, WY the Black Dog Animal Rescue is a 501c non-profit no kill animal shelter that runs strictly on donations and volunteers. BDAR believes that no healthy, treatable, or rehabilitatable animal should be euthanized in Wyoming’s shelters because of population restrictions the length of time it may take to find a permanent home. BDAR can be found on the web at www.bdar.org

About The Doo House: Based in Laramie, WY The Doo House – Pet Waste Removal and Pet Services started in business in January 2010. They come to your home or place of business and do the worst part of being a pet owner, cleaning up after them. After almost two years in business The Doo House has become not only Southeast Wyoming’s premiere pet waste removal company but also the premiere pet services company. The Doo House can be found on the web at www.thedoohouse.info.

Thanks guys for such a wonderful cause! Black Dog Animal Rescue does WONDERFUL work in Wyoming — and the Doo House is awesome for coming up with such an easy way to give back! Contact them for more info!

What is “Bad” art? We all have our own ideas on what makes a piece of art suck worse than the next but we’ve put people to the test. The Corridor Gallery in Casper released a call for entries in August asking the public to submit bad art for a chance at a $500 prize for Worst In Show. Entries poured in and most made us sick. How do you quantify the amount of bad artwork that was submitted? We counted it. We have over 40 pieces of pathetic attemps at art ready to show. We’re happy, embarassed, a little saddened and generally sickened to display them for the October 22nd Bad Art Event at the Corridor Gallery.

The Corridor Gallery is excited to announce the one day event: “Bad Art”, a call for original submissions. The submitted original work was derrived from artists, friends, family, found, purchased at thrift stores, antique stores, garage sales. All works but the “Worst in Show” can be bid upon to either keep or destroy by checking a box on the silent auction sheet. Works with a winning bid of destruction will be destroyed by fire, explosion or weaponry by Corridor staff and a video will be made public of the acts. Attendants to the opening will be given raffle tickets with the purchase of a drink or can buy 2 tickets for $5. The raffle ticket will double as a write in vote for “Worst in Show”. The submitter of the winning “Worst in Show” piece will win a cash prize of $500 based upon public vote at the opening reception.

OCTOBER – WY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

LINK BACK TO OUR WEBSITE & READ OUR CURRENT ISSUES:

Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine: www.wyolifestyle.com

Wyovore:  www.wyovore.com

Our sister pub:   Wyoming Weddings:  www.wyoweddings.com

We’re familiar with breast cancer awareness month in October, and here is another worthwhile awareness topic for the month — domestic violence. Our agencies and SAFE houses across Wyoming work tirelessly protecting the lives of individuals affected by abuse. It’s an emotionally challenging profession and these individuals deserve applause for their efforts! Thanks to Governor Mead for recognizing the importance of this cause in Wyoming.

On October 5th, 2011, Governor Matt Mead signed an official Proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Wyoming.

Observing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in 1987 to promote increased rights and services for domestic violence victims; to educate the public about the crisis of domestic violence and the prevalence of this epidemic in all of our lives; and to encourage involvement and support from our community for domestic violence victims and those who serve them.

This year marks the 24th commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time for communities to unite in their support of victims and to work cooperatively to be a part of the solution through efforts to prevent violence before it occurs.

According to the CDC’s most recent statistics, 1 in 4 women in the United States will be a victim of domestic violence at some point in her life. It is the single largest cause of injury to American women, yet the Federal Bureau of Investigations lists it as one of the most underreported crimes in the country. Men are also affected by domestic violence; the same study by the CDC found that as many as 1 in 9 men will be a victim of an abusive partner during his lifetime.

Ending domestic violence requires a community commitment.  In order for policies and resources to be effective, there must be a coordinated effort between criminal justice professionals, victims’ service providers, prosecutors, health care providers, educators, and elected officials.  Individuals can be proactive in addressing violence in their lives, in the lives of their families and friends, and in their workplaces and schools.

Every county in Wyoming has a domestic violence shelter program and each program commemorates Domestic Violence Awareness Month with specific community events and activities.  To learn more about activities in your community, or to find out information about the local services available to victims & survivors of domestic violence, please contact the Wyoming Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at 307-755-5481 or www.wyomingdvsa.org.

Thank you again to all the agencies and places of help for those suffering from domestic violence. Their efforts help improve our friends’ and neighbors’ lives, but it also takes the work of friends, family members, co-workers, teachers, health care workers, etc. to help give support and encouragement to those in need.

WYOMING LIBRARIES SNAPSHOT DAY

Wyoming’s libraries highlighted on Snapshot Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 11 the state’s libraries will host Wyoming Snapshot Day, an event highlighting the importance of libraries to the state. More than 60 libraries will collect photos, comments and usage numbers to illustrate their impact every day of the year. Participating sites include public, school, special, community college and University of Wyoming libraries.

“Wyomingites love their libraries,” Susan Mark, Wyoming State Library statistics librarian said. “They use them to encourage their kids to read, to find a job, to further their education. Last year, circulation was well over 5 million. Wyoming public libraries alone typically have between 3 and 4 million visits and nearly a million computer uses a year. The typical school librarian sees every student in the building at least once a week.”

Many libraries will be taking pictures of their activities and asking patrons to fill out short survey forms and to provide comments. “Beyond the numbers, we really want people’s stories,” Mark said. “Whether it’s a child checking out a book for the first time, a high school student learning how to do research, or someone finding information on how to re-enter the workforce, we want to know how people are using our libraries.”

Wyoming residents can participate in Snapshot Day by visiting their local library and providing their comments. More information on the event, and a list of participating libraries may be found at http://wyomingsnapshot.weebly.com/.

Wyoming Snapshot Day is a project of the Wyoming State Library (WSL) and the Wyoming Library Association. For more information, contact Susan Mark, WSL statistics librarian at 307-777-5915 or susan.mark@wyo.gov.

Thank you to our fabulous Wyoming libraries and librarians who dedicate their time to enriching our lives in the Cowboy State!
