JEWISH KLEZMER CONCERT<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Klezmania — www.bennybemusic.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

The opening concert for this year\u2019s annual Jackson Hole Jewish Music Festival<\/a> is the widely acclaimed Klezmania<\/a>, founded in 1989 in San Francisco by world-class artist Ben Brussell.<\/p>\n

A classically trained jazz musician and musicologist, Brussell plans to perform primarily Klezmer and Yiddish music followed by a sing-a-long with traditional Israeli songs that are popular in the US.\u00a0He became enamored with Klezmer upon discovering it in high school. \u201cI was a Jewish typical kid from the suburbs and I was so proud that this was part of my culture,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Klezmania is a contemporary representation of Klezmer music, he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to be a modern Jew doing this antiquated music with the community and hearing peoples\u2019 response to it.\u201d\u00a0He stresses that here has been much innovation, noting the influence of classical and American jazz.<\/p>\n

Much of the band\u2019s improvisation is based upon Eastern European folk music idioms.\u00a0\u201cMy contention has always been to push the boundaries of music. I think the music itself shouldn\u2019t be sacrificed spiritually. The Ashkenazi Jewish experience is channeled through this music. The music itself is very pure, a soulful expression of the Jewish narrative.”<\/p>\n

\u201cOur approach is more like a New York society band. We dress up in suits. We\u2019re a jazz band doing Klezmer. We don\u2019t use a clarinet; we use a soprano saxophone. We\u2019re probably the only Klezmer band on the planet that doesn\u2019t use a clarinet,\u201d Brussell says.<\/p>\n

The accolades they get are manifold.\u00a0\u201cTheir performance exceeded our wildest hopes,\u201d one fan enthused.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo words can describe how terrific you were,\u201d raved another. \u201cBeing a musician myself, I\u2019ve always believed that music is the most important element of any event.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Brussell, \u201cwhat we\u2019re doing is unique because we\u2019re a thriving\u00a0simcha<\/em>\u00a0[celebration event] band that has transcended into the concert realm.\u201d\u00a0The musicians are of diverse backgrounds and were chosen for their superior talent. \u00a0Depending on the event, they play mandolin, violin, saxophone, accordion, keyboard, guitar, bass and drums.\u00a0\u201cKlezmer has many layers, just like any type of music,\u201d Brussell said.<\/p>\n

As for the Jackson Hole event, he thinks that it\u2019s \u201cexciting, and I\u2019m honored to be going.\u201d\u00a0The kick-off event takes place Sunday, February 12, 5 pm, at Snake River Lodge & Spa, Sundance Ballroom, 7710 Granite Loop Road, Teton Village, Wyoming.<\/p>\n

CRYSTAL CLASSIC WINTER FESTIVAL — GREEN RIVER<\/strong><\/p>\n
