LANDER: \u00a0Lander Art Center Presents “Near and Far,” Opening August 8<\/h2>\n

The Lander Art Center opens Near and Far, a paintspective by Jon Cox Friday, August 8th from 6-8pm. His work represents both the vibrant life in Wyoming as well as the places and people he counters on his travels around the world. Wildlife and the everyday is juxtaposed next to urbanscapes and the exotic creating a reminder of the extraordinary diversity life offers and asks us to experience.<\/p>\n

From the Artist:<\/p>\n

“This is sort of a starting point for me, a ‘perspective’ gained from\u00a0<\/em>experience and knowledge of painting.\u00a0I paint only what and in the way I want, but like the\u00a0<\/em>interaction of discussing how these works came to be with others. \u00a0Out of\u00a0<\/em>this comes new ideas and true growth.<\/em><\/p>\n

These are all works that have been finished in the last year. \u00a0They\u00a0represent the travels I have experienced, the ‘far’, and the new way I have\u00a0been looking at things close to me where I live, the ‘near’.\u00a0\u00a0I am mostly representational and a\u00a0realist. \u00a0However, underneath the obvious image I always try to build a\u00a0‘framework’ or ‘composition’ that does not alienate the format of the canvas\u00a0<\/em>with the image on it. \u00a0I try to marry the two without forcing their union.”<\/em><\/p>\n

SINKS CANYON: \u00a0Photography Raffle Helps The Park — Buy Yours Today!<\/h2>\n

The annual Sinks Canyon State Park raffle is going on and people are encouraged to buy a raffle ticket to win one of three beautiful pictures.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can support Sinks Canyon in many ways,\u201d said Park Superintendent Darrel Trembly. \u201cBut we always need financial support especially to do display work. This way people can support us and have a chance to win a great picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three fully framed and matted photographs by award winning Lander photographers Scott Copeland and Gene Schmidt are being raffled off to help raise money for new displays in the park visitor center.<\/p>\n

Schmidt donated a photo of a bright blue Mountain Bluebird and a red and cream Cassin\u2019s Finch. Copeland donated a soaring Golden Eagle flying through the snow in the canyon.<\/p>\n

Wyoming Watercolor Society (WYWS) will host\u00a0the Watercolor Wyoming 29th Annual National Exhibition<\/strong> in Sheridan, WY August 4th through August 29th. Please join us at the awards ceremony and artists\u2019 reception on Thursday, August 7th from 5-7pm at the Sagebrush Community Art Center located in the Historic Train Depot \u2013 201 E. 5th<\/sup> Street. This is a free reception and is open to the public.\u00a0 Refreshments will be available.<\/p>\n

WYWS has hosted both an Annual National Exhibition and a Watercolor Workshop\u00a0in the state of Wyoming for the past 29 years. The workshop instructors are nationally known and have brought abstract, realism and experimental watercolor styles to the participants. Students attending have represented states across the nation traveling as far away as Canada, Alaska, California, Nevada and Florida.<\/p>\n

Artists are juried into each year’s show and compete for prize money, national recognition,\u00a0and a chance to gain signing membership status. WYWS supplies a format for artists to learn, compete and have fun. This year WYWS is showcasing\u00a046 paintings done by 27 artists from 13 states.<\/p>\n

Nancy Baldrica from Avondale, Arizona\u00a0will\u00a0teach a\u00a05 day workshop August 4th through August 8th at the Big Horn Women\u2019s Club.\u00a0 Spaces are still available for the workshop. \u00a0The fee for Wyoming Watercolor Society Members is $350 and $400 for nonmembers.\u00a0 Membership is open to all watercolor artists 18 years of age or older.\u00a0 New memberships are $35 for a year, then $25 a year for renewal.\u00a0 For more information please call Karen Myers at 751-6411 or visit the website at www.wyomingwatercolorsociety.com.<\/a><\/p>\n
