This week we are featuring Gaukel Grown & Ground of Keeline, WY (between Lusk & Douglas on Hwy 20)

Kevin & Julie Gaukel 322 Divide Road  Keeline, WY 82227 (307) 334-3252

sales@gaukelwheet.com     www.gaukelwheat.com

The Gaukel family has been growing quality grains in the heart of Wyoming wheat country since 1914. The Gaukels are fourth generation farmers and ranchers. Kevin spends many hours of “tractor time” giving him great opportunities to think. It was during one of these trips around the field that an idea came to him! They were expecting their third child and needed to find a way to increase their revenue with the resources they had available. At the time bread machines were becoming increasingly popular. Kevin decided that they should offer their wheat in pre-packaged, convenient mixes directly to the consumer. So in 1999, Gaukel Grown & Ground was established near Keeline, Wyoming, which allowed the Gaukels to bring their award winning grain straight from their Wyoming wheat field to your home.

Today people are striving to lead a healthier lifestyle, and the Gaukels are helping them reach their goals. They stone grind their wheat, leaving it as healthful as the Lord intended. The Gaukels take pride in their all-natural whole wheat products, which stand apart from others by the way they are processed. Stone grinding leaves the wheat kernels whole allowing the wheat germ to be retained. This gives their whole wheat mixes a higher source of fiber and other nutrients.  The Gaukel family not only plants and harvests their annual crop of wheat; they clean it, grind it, mix and package it.

In 1999, Gaukel Grown & Ground began with only 3 products. Now the product line has expanded to offer 14 different whole wheat choices to meet the desires of your family as well as satisfying your gift giving needs.  The following products sold individual or in 3 unique gift sets:  Pancake Mix, Muffin Mix, Italian Herb Bread Mix, Multi-Grain Bread Mix, Wheat-n-Raisin Bread Mix, Whole Wheat Bread Mix, Doughnut Mix, Cracked Wheat Cereal, and Whole Wheat Flour.  It’s convenient, prepackaged, and nutritious with a home-grown taste. Preparing stone ground whole wheat is a slow process, but it ensures a quality of flour that we are sure you’ll enjoy. The coarseness of the texture is determined by how far apart the two stones are set. They can grind cake flour fine or just pop the kernel open. Since very little heat is generated, all the nutrients come through.

Gaukel Grown & Ground now offers two convenient packaging options. The Kraft bag with tin-tie closure is available for wholesale customers in the grocery industry, as well as for regular customers for their own personal consumption. New to their packaging line is a hand-made cloth pouch, using coordinating country style fabrics. This packaging choice is available for wholesale customers in the gift industry, as well as for customers purchasing the mixes for special occasions. The Gaukel daughters, Kaitlin and Kylee, sew these unique, one of a kind, cloth pouches.

If you’re looking for a gift with country flair, try one of their “Bouquet of Flours” today!

One of the gift sets are sure to be perfect for any occasion: thank you, birthdays, anniversaries, special holidays, house warming party, secret pals, hostess gifts, pastor’s appreciation, or a well-timed pick me up . . .

Our Daily Bread Bouquet – The best selling gift set! It features all 8 of their mixes served in a very stylish, yet practical, 8 quart stainless steel bowl with a large wire whisk.

Breakfast Bonanza Bouquet – Four mouthwatering mixes served with the same touch of country in a 5 quart stainless steel bowl with a medium wire whisk – featuring our Pancake, Muffin, Doughnut, and Wheat-N-Raisin Bread Mixes.

Build Your Own Bouquet – You choose the arrangement of “flours”! Select from any 3 mixes (some exclusions apply) in a 3 quart stainless steel bowl with a small wire whisk.

Enjoy Gaukel Grown & Ground’s home grown goodness and modern convenience. Look for their products in specialty shops and grocery stores throughout the nation.  They direct ship for all your holiday and gift giving needs!  They’ll even include a gift card expressing your personal sentiments.

Gaukel Grown & Ground products are currently not available in Cheyenne, but they certainly would love to be.  People can go to their favorite grocery or gift shop and ask them to begin carrying their product line today!

Gaukel Grown & Ground’s focus is actually two-fold. They strive to provide quality whole wheat products to their customers while educating America’s youth about the importance of agriculture. The Gaukels reach their minds and their hearts through “Living Classrooms”, Ag Expos, and national speaking engagements.

Since its inception in 1999, Gaukel Grown & Ground has cooperated with the Niobrara County Cattlewomen and the Niobrara County School District to provide agriculture education to the youth in the area.  Annually, the Niobrara Cattlewomen host an Ag Exp for the 4th and 5th grade students, and Gaukel Grown & Ground participates to educate children in the basics of food production.

The Gaukels also host a tour of their ranch for 3rd and 4th graders. They turn their ranch into a “Living Classroom” with sessions focusing on sustainable agriculture, conservation of land and resources, and urban and rural partnerships to name a few topics. Students see first-hand how wheat is grown, processed, and turned into a variety of foods. The Gaukels have hosted school districts throughout Wyoming for this one of a kind learning experience!

In, 2006, they also began teaching workshops during the Black Hills Conservation Camp located at Mallo.

2007-State, Regional, & NATIONAL Home-Based Business Champion of the Year!

After winning the Wyoming title, Gaukel Grown & Ground was named the United States Small Business Administration’s 2007 Region VIII Home-Based Business Champion Award winner. They were selected from amongst an elite group of entrepreneurs and community leaders representing Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. They were fortunate to then advance to win the NATIONAL title!

This week we are featuring Bare Body Soaps of Douglas, Wyoming

Rosanne Muncy PO Box 749   Douglas, WY 82633   307-359-1263  customerservice@barebodysoaps.com  www.barebodysoaps.com

Inspired by the fresh air & wide open spaces of Wyoming, Rosanne Muncy wanted to make natural soap for her family of 11 (yes, hubby and 9 kids.)  She wanted to avoid the kids growing up using toxic products.  After putting the idea on hold for awhile, a dear friend’s 16 year old daughter died from cancer and they were having a fundraiser. Rosanne wanted to be able to make something that she could sell and give some of the profits to the Children’s Hospital where Janelle died.  So, she picked up the soap making books and learned.  Every year Rosanne donates to the CHOC Walk at Disneyland for Children’s Hospital of Orange County.  She has also donated to Laramie Peak Humane Society in Douglas, and to Clean the World (an organization that recycles soap and distributes it to people in need around the world).

Rosanne handcrafts affordable and luxurious soaps with certified organic oils, essential oils, and botanicals to produce vegan and cruelty-free soaps.  Bare Body Soaps Organics is committed to the environment, using sustainable and fair-trade ingredients and eco-friendly packaging made from recycled paper.

Rosanne makes soap using the old-fashioned, cold-process method.  She does not “cook” her soap because she wants the healing and moisturizing qualities of the oils & botanicals she uses to remain.  She uses only certified organic oils of extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil and palm oil. The palm oil used is sustainably sourced so it does not deplete habitats like some palm oils do.  Rosanne does not use any fragrances, petroleum products, or any harmful ingredients.

Bare Body Soaps Organics two best sellers, Organic Green Tea & Lemongrass Soap, are made with organic green tea which gives the soap a dark green color. Rosanne adds the tea leaves for flecks of darker color within the soap. The Organic Lavender Soap, Rosanne’s personal favorite, is made with crushed lavender buds for gentle exfoliation and scented with lavender essential oil.  Women and men alike love this — they like that it is “scratchy” to get the dirt off.

Customers can make special orders and Bare Body Soap Organics also has gift sets. They make custom soap favors for weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, etc.

People can find Bare Body Soap Organics at Grandma’s Attic in Cheyenne and Country Come Home right outside of Cheyenne.  Bare Body Soap Organics are also sold in many towns in Wyoming and across the nation.  You can also find the soap products through Triple Crown Commodities. Bare Body Soap Organics are also available via their website:  www.BareBodySoaps.com; there is flat-rate shipping of $6.

Bare Body Soap Organics products are all-natural and made with care.  In fact, the company  motto is “We Care for What’s Bare.”  Rosanne loves making soap that nourishes the skin and is an affordable luxury.  They make great gifts and stocking stuffers because everybody needs soap. She is very dedicated to using environmentally friendly packaging that is made from recycled paper and is recyclable.  The gifts sets come in wooden crates so they are eco-friendly too.  Rosanne is proud to be a certified business with Green America and is certified at the Gold Level.  All of Bare Body Soap Organics products are certified vegan and cruelty free.

SHERIDAN:  WYO Theater Gala presents “Anything Goes”, October 20

From Sheridan Chamber of Commerce:  The WYO Theater’s Annual Fundraising Gala features the musical “Anything Goes”, winner of three 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. Cole Porter’s classic stars your favorite local talent in an unforgettably fun and willfully silly musical. As the SS American heads out to sea, two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love … proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise, and some good old-fashioned blackmail. Peppering this hilariously bumpy ride are some of the musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “It’s Delovely,” and of course “Anything Goes.” The October 20th performance is the big gala event, with hors d’oeurves and drinks preceding the performance. Doors open at 6:00 pm, curtain at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the gala evening are $100 per person. For more information and to purchase tickets (when available), contact the WYO Theater box office at (307) 672-9084 or online at www.wyotheater.com. Encore performance will be October 25-28.

WYOMING FIRST: Best of the West Productions

Visit our website: www.wyolifestyle.com

We are thrilled to team with the Wyoming Business Council to feature a Wyoming First business every week on our blog! Wyoming First is a program that promotes Wyoming member businesses. Visit their website (click here) to learn more about this service — and if you are a Wyoming business who’s not a member, be sure to inquire about membership! There are many benefits!

This week, we are featuring Best of the West Productions of Cody, Wyoming:

Jack Peterson, President/Owner jack@thebestofthewest.net   www.longrangestore.com

Best of the West Productions (BOTW) initially formed in 2003 as a hunting television production company, formerly known as Bridger Trails Video.  Their specialty was long range hunting and the system of choice was a 7mm Magnum with a Leupold VariX 3 scope.  As BOTW used these systems, they found various shortcomings and began developing their own high quality custom gun and a rifle scope that incorporates ballistic information in a turret-reticle design.  In 2007 BOTW rolled out the Huskemaw 5-20×50 rifle scope with a custom calibrated turret that matched a specific load in a specific rifle to a specific elevation and temperature.  This rifle scope was the first of its kind and, with BOTW proprietary software, was able to precisely calculate a bullet’s trajectory in specific environmental conditions.  BOTW could also precisely calculate the amount of wind deflection that would occur and give shooters the means of compensating for wind drift.

The BOTW philosophy, which flies in the face of philosophies that have stood for generations, was not welcomed in the hunting community: (1) Bullet performance is more important than velocity; (2) Ethical hunting can occur beyond 300 yards and even at extreme ranges; (3) Compensating for wind drift is not a guessing game.  BOTW television series was the means to prove all were wrong.  They demonstrate time and time again that shots at extreme ranges are possible with this technology.

As news began to spread, Best of the West emerged as the Long Range Hunting Authority.  The success of the television series has led to the online retail store, LongRangeStore.com, which carries gear featured in the show, and a custom ammunition product line, which is specifically for extended ranges.

Featured products: Huskemaw Blue Diamond 5-20×50 rifle scope ($1,349), Huskemaw Blue Diamond 3-12×42 rifle scope ($999). Products can be purchased from LongRangeStore.com or 130 dealers located across the country.  A map of dealers is located at HuskemawOptics.com. Long range rifle systems can be custom ordered.

BLACK DOG ANIMAL RESCUE IN CHEYENNE HAS A DOG IN NEED!

Can you help Jordyn? More information on Jordyn follows, sent to us by Britney of Black Dog Animal Rescue in Cheyenne. She is in need of a super loving home!

Hello friends,

I am sending this e-mail today in the hope that you will forward it to all of your friends, family, and co-workers and encourage them to do the same. We have a dog in rescue who has the most sorrowful tale and she really needs to find a loving, forever home.

Jordyn is now a 6 or 7 year old. She still moves around great and has plenty of energy, though she’s not a wild dog at all. We believe she is a boxer and Doberman cross, and she has the softest, most beautiful chestnut fur.

Not because she has behavioral or physical problems, Jordyn has been in and out of the BDAR family for 5 years. She was among the first dogs our program rescued.

The first time she was adopted, Jordyn’s people flew here on their private jet and took her home to leave on a ski resort in MT. We heard from them once when they told us she had been hit by a service vehicle but had recovered satisfactorily.

2 ½ years later, Jordyn was picked up as a stray in Ft.Collins, and traced back to us by her microchip. When we picked her up, it was apparent she had recently undergone major surgery and she was covered in patches of shaved hair and had apparent suture lines all over her body. She looked a little like Frankenstein, all pieced together. When we called the people in MT who had adopted her, we were informed she had been given away some time before. The person they gave her to left us only a voicemail saying she had been attacked by a mountain lion and that they gave her away to someone else afterwards because they didn’t believe they could keep her safe. The shelter in Ft.Collins attempted to contact the 3rd owners who apparently lived there and they explained they had had Jordyn only two days and that while walking her on leash a stray dog approached them and initiated a fight. They were afraid and novice dog owners and decided it was best to “set Jordyn free” on the streets ofFort Collins. No, I am not making this up!

Jordyn came back to BDAR and went back into foster care. She had a long stay, about 6 months. Then last fall, she was adopted again by a local family. This family kept her nearly a year but then returned her when she developed mild urinary incontinence, which is easily maintained by a daily medication that costs next to nothing to purchase.

She went into foster care again. And despite having had a pretty awful life so far, she continues to be an outgoing, friendly dog. But, once again she is facing a move. Jordyn’s foster sibling has taken exception to her and has attacked her on several occasions, warranting at least one trip to the emergency vet. She cannot stay in her foster home as the stress is too much for her and the other dogs.

What Jordyn needs now is an adoptive home. And a really, really good one. This dog needs spoiling rotten, a soft place to lie down, and someone who can overlook her scars and missing teeth.

If you know someone like this who can offer her a great home, please have them contact bdar@bdar.org, or 307-214-6600. Thanks!.

Here is Jordyn’s Petfinder link with pictures. Please share.  http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/20414529

Thank you to all of our animal rescue friends across Wyoming that do such great and selfless work for animals… If you know of someone who can help Jordyn, please contact Britney — or us, and we can forward you onto Britney!

NEWS FROM THE PARKS: Climber Dies from Fall on Middle Teton

LINK TO OUR WEBSITE & READ THE CURRENT ISSUE:  www.wyolifestyle.com

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK NEWS RELEASE

A climber fell to his death on the Middle Teton in Grand Teton National Park on Sunday, July 22, 2012. Justin Harold Beldin, age 27 of Benicia, California and two climbing partners had summited the 12,804-foot mountain and were beginning to descend the peak about noon when the accident occurred.

Another group of climbers near the summit of the Middle Teton saw Beldin fall from sight toward the Northwest Couloir side of the ridge that separates it from the Southwest Couloir. They hailed Beldin’s companions—who were already working their way down from the summit via the Southwest Couloir—to alert them of the situation. Beldin’s climbing partners did not witness the accident, but upon hearing of his fall, they tried to catch sight of him down the Northwest Couloir. They yelled out his name in hopes of getting a response, but received no answer in return.

A member of the climbing party that witnessed Beldin’s fall called the Jenny Lake Ranger Station directly by cell phone at 12:09 p.m. to notify park rangers of the incident. Rangers immediately began to mobilize a response, and summoned a Teton Interagency contract helicopter to conduct an aerial reconnaissance flight in order to ascertain Beldin’s location on the Middle Teton. Rangers saw Beldin during that over flight and determined that he likely suffered fatal injuries in a fall of approximately 1,000 feet.

An approaching thunderstorm forced the ship to land and wait for better weather. Unfortunately the storm worsened, causing rangers to postpone their attempt to reach Beldin. An off-duty ranger at the Lower Saddle hiked to a high point where he could view Beldin. Due to weather conditions, rock fall, and the nature of the terrain, if was unsafe for him to attempt to reach the victim in the couloir.

Rangers made preparations to reach Beldin’s body on Monday morning when favorable weather and more stable environmental conditions might allow rescue personnel to safely access the steep and loose-rock terrain of the Northwest Couloir.

Heavy fog delayed an aerial recovery operation on Monday morning. However about 10:30 a.m., four rangers were inserted by helicopter to the landing zone at the Lower Saddle of the Grand Teton. They climbed to where Beldin came to rest after his fall and prepared his body for evacuation from the peak. Beldin’s body was turned over to the Teton County coroner at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 23.

Although originally from California, Beldin had been living in Victor, Idaho since April and working in Jackson, Wyoming. He only recently teamed up with his two companions to make the climb. One of his partners had been acquainted with him since April; the other climber only met him on Sunday morning.

Beldin carried an ice axe with him on the climb; however, he was not wearing a helmet.

The Middle Teton is one of the most popular climbs in the Teton Range and is often reached via the Southwest Couloir. The rock climbing section of the Northwest Couloir is rated a 5.6 on the Yosemite Decimal System—a set of numeric ratings describing the difficulty of climbs. There is also a snow and ice section of the couloir that is rated a 3 on the Alpine Ice numeric rating scale.

This marks the fourth fatality in the Teton Range this year. Earlier, two backcountry skiers were killed in an avalanche on Ranger Peak on March 7, and a climber fell to his death on Teewinot on July 12.

Congratulations to Glendo, Wyoming, book publishing company, High Plains Press, and owner Nancy Curtis, for winning two major book awards!

Actor Wes Studi presents the Lariat Award to High Plains Press Publisher Nancy Curtis.

The press was recognized in Albuquerque, on June 16, 2012, by Western Writers of America with the Lariat Award, which goes to a publishing industry professional for support of western books and authors. Publisher Nancy Curtis accepted the award from Wes Studi, who has starred in many movies including Geronimo in the motion picture Geronimo, Joe Leaphorn in the movie made from the Tony Hillerman book, and a role in Dances with Wolves.

The WWA website says: “Proving that neither location nor size affects good work, High Plains Press, which operates on a cattle ranch near Glendo, Wyoming, has won five Wrangler Awards from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for poetry, a Willa award and several Willa finalist awards from Women Writing the West, several finalist awards in the Western Writers of America Spur Awards, and finalists in the Ben Franklin Awards competitions. Publisher Nancy Curtis has also published several winners for book awards from the Wyoming Historical Society.”

This honor has only been bestowed six times. Previous awards have been presented to the University of Oklahoma Press, True West Magazine, Tom Doherty/Forge Books, Caxton Press, Dorchester Publishing/Leisure Books, and Luther Wilson University Press Director.

In April, Married into It, by Patricia Frolander, published by High Plains Press, won a Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. The award, a bronze based on the painting the Night Herder, was presented to Curtis in a black-tie ceremony by two grandchildren of John Wayne.

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us! What are your plans for the holiday weekend?

JACKSON — WILD WEST DAYS & OLD WEST BREW FEST

So here’s what our buddies at Snake River Brewing have to say about the Old West Brew Fest on Saturday (TOMORROW!):  “THIS SATURDAY on the Jackson Hole Town Square at 11:00am directly following the parade. Regional and national breweries unite under the HUGE tent with music, food and award winning beers. Come and join the fun! All proceeds go to underwriting the Old West Days weekend.”  Sweet!

The JH Rotary Wine Fest kicks off the weekend (that’s tonight!) You can get tickets at the door to the event, which is held at Snow King from 5-8 PM. On Saturday morning, the parade kicks off at 10 AM at Town Square, the brew fest kicks off at 11 AM, there are carriage rides available for a fee downtown…THEN, the Shoot Out will take place at 6 PM, and the rodeo at 8 PM — and that’s just on Saturday!

WY-P-A — WYOMING’S COLLABORATION BREW — There’s No ‘I’ in ‘Beer’

If you missed our WY Food News blog on April 26, click here to read more about WY-P-A, Wyoming’s collaboration brew which is similar to an IPA. A joint effort between Wyoming’s breweries, the brew was created in Pinedale in late April. The participating breweries gathered and each contributed a portion of this historic compilation.  Now, on May 14, the brew will be served simultaneously at each participating brewery — and we’re excited to see the response! Altitude sent us some great images of the group in Pinedale, as well as their own Nathan Venner from the event…totally diggin’ the tux…

WYOMING CHRONICLE — Wyoming PBS Program features Wyoming Whiskey and WY-P-A

(Riverton, Wyo.)  – This Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. on Wyoming PBS, Wyoming Chronicle visits with Wyoming Whiskey COO David DeFazio, and Master Distiller Steve Nally about their obsession with creating the state’s first bourbon whiskey from all Wyoming ingredients, a spirit that is scheduled to make its first appearance in December of this year.

Next, Chronicle producer Richard Ager sits down with brew masters Steve Simpson from Snowy Mountain Brewery in Saratoga and Richie Strom from Wind River Brewing Company in Pinedale and talks about the collaborative effort taken by thirteen brew masters from across the state, including Lander, who gathered recently in Pinedale to create a single beer for Wyoming, WyPA, just in time to celebrate National Craft Beer Week, May 14-20.
