LANDER BREWFEST – JUNE 12& 13

The 2015 Lander Brewfest will be held on Friday June 12th from 5-9pm and Saturday June 13th from 2-7pm in the Lander City Park, 405 Fremont Street. Tickets and more information about the breweries and program are available at www.landerbrewfest.com. The early-bird ticket rates are $25 for a one-day pass and $45 for a full weekend pass. Tickets can also be purchased day-of for $30/$50, giving 21+ age adults unlimited access to over 70 beers from our 25+ breweries that are coming from Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Colorado.

“We are excited to be moving Brewfest back to City Park,” said Rose Burke, Event Coordinator of the Lander Chamber of Commerce. “In addition to the centralized and sheltered location, this year’s event will include vibrant music, excellent food, and interactive games such as Beer Trivia and the Lawn Game Olympics.” Burke adds, “And the event is open to all ages, so kids and non-drinkers are welcome for free.” Please note: as an all-ages event, Lander Brewfest coordinators require all minors be accompanied by an adult and to please leave pets at home.

Burke noted that this year’s event gives regional craft brewers an opportunity to shine and has added new programs such as “Brewer’s Corner Classes” and “You Be the Beer Judge” sessions where participants can learn more about craft beer. “Our craft brewers are really artists that create some of the best beer in the country. They have a lot to share about their trade and have a vested interest in educating beer connoisseurs,” she added. “Hopefully, we all leave Brewfest with a better appreciation of who is making good beer and continue supporting these small businesses by demanding these products at local bar taps and on supermarket shelves.”

Lander Brewfest is also hosting Wyoming.com “Golf with the Brewers” 9-hole scramble at the Lander Golf Club, Saturday June 13th from 9am-12pm. “We have 30 of our brewers signed up and most of them are bringing some of their brews to share,” said Burke. “It should be a fun opportunity to play golf, talk with the brewers, and play golf.” Tickets are $30, available online.

Brewfest is partnering Saturday’s events with the Fremont Area Road Tour, a road bike race for all ages, levels, and distances beginning and ending at Lander City Park. June 1st is the deadline to register for the “Bike and Brew” packages: www.landercyclingevents.org.

The 2015 Lander Brewfest is presented by Fremont Toyota and sixteen additional partnering sponsors and organizations. Please thank these businesses by supporting them with your patronage.

“With two race distances of 4 and 11 miles, the runs promise to challenge runners of all inclinations and abilities; both include hill climbs, swooping smooth singletrack, and technical running,” said Evan Reimondo, co-founder and coach of the LRC. “These runs feature new, world class trails in the foothills of the Wind River range, and we truly believe they will become classic trail races.” said Amber Wilson, also co-Founder and coach of the running club.

The Lander Running Club hosts a weekly track workout on Wednesday nights and group trail runs on Saturdays along with a growing series of races year-round. Membership in LRC is free and open to the community. The public Menorah lightings are organized by Chabad Rabbi Zalman Mendelsohn, Executive Director of the Chabad Jewish Center of Jackson Hole, who remarked, “The Menorah serves as a symbol of Jackson’s dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship freely, celebrate openly, and share in our diversity with pride.  Specifically in America, a nation that was founded upon and vigorously protects the right of every person to practice his or her culture free from restraint and persecution, the Menorah takes on profound significance, embodying both Chanukah tradition and constitutional principles.”

About Chabad Jewish Center of Jackson Hole

Simply put, Chabad’s mission is to reach out to others with acts of goodness and kindness. We’re a community-based nonprofit organization whose efforts are rooted in traditional Jewish values — and many of our programs help the needy regardless of background or belief.

Chabad Rabbi Zalman and Mrs. Raizy Mendelsohn came to serve the Jewish community of Wyoming in 2007 and now run a network of nonsectarian educational and social services. Thanks to our generous supporters, we’ve been able to educate, comfort, and give hope to countless people in need.

Chabad Jewish Center of Jackson Hole is part of the largest Jewish organization in the world, with over 3,700 branches spanning the globe. Chabad embraces a philosophy of study, meditation, and social outreach that combines rigorous academics with proactive community involvement. Our rapidly growing array of educational, cultural and social services programs has made us one of the most dynamic forces in modern Jewish life. “Chabad” is a Hebrew acronym for “Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge. Founded in 1772 by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, Chabad promotes the mystical, traditional, legal and social principles of the Torah — while using modern methods and technology for education, community outreach, youth programs, crisis intervention, and other social services.

Chabad has consistently been at the forefront of Jewish education and community activism. The work of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Chabad Rebbe of blessed memory who assumed leadership of the movement in 1950, is legendary. Motivated by a profound love for humanity and spurred by boundless optimism, the Rebbe lifted the global Jewish community from the ashes of the Holocaust and launched an unprecedented range of Jewish institutions, outreach programs and social services.

Today, more than 4,600 of the Rebbe’s emissaries and a workforce of more than 20,000 continue and expand the Rebbe’s mission to create a world of goodness, kindness and Godliness, as Chabad constantly innovates new approaches in educational, social and community services throughout the world.

New Art Exhibit Showcases Creative Lives of Our Librarians
Jackson, WY- When Teton County Library staffers are not busy helping community members answer research questions, navigate new technology or find books, they’re making sculptures, music, paintings, poetry, hand-bound books and other art. Come see their creativity, now being showcased in the Library Staff Art Show, which opened Wednesday and will be on display in the Library Gallery through January.

“There’s a surprising quality to it,” said Library Director Deb Adams. “People think librarians are serious. What you see is we’re fun; we’re creative.”

The show features art created by 23 library staffers when they’re not at work. Library IT Systems Manager Kent Fiske made a vase and paperweight now on display. Before he started working at the library, Fiske worked as a professional glass blower and artist. Cut facets on the iridescent, oval-shaped paperweight invites the eye to peer inside where Fiske has created a miniature “universe” that appears to mimic mountains swirling in clouds.

Displayed next to Fiske’s glass are two hand-bound books made by Library Volunteer Program Coordinator Lokey Lytjen. “I love it, it’s very relaxing,” Lytjen says of the art of binding her own books. One of her pieces, a simple bound book that’s a tribute to her parents, holds together hand-made mulberry paper embellished with calligraphy and family pictures.

Library Education and Program Manager Oona Doherty oversees exhibits in the library. She said she got a surprise when helping arrange this exhibit. When she accidentally knocked over an origami sculpture created by Library Assistant Eva Dahlgren, out fell butterflies and a small piece of paper referencing Newton’s Third Law, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

Likewise, Library Page Robin Allison references another famous mind, Vincent Van Gogh, by recreating, in painstaking detail with a needle and thread, Van Gogh’s 1888 painting, “Bedroom in Arles.”

The Library Staff Art Show also holds other clues to the creative lives of library workers with title cards highlighting one biographical element about each artist, revealing their favorite literary character; what they’re reading now; or their hometown library.

You can find Teton County Library online at www.tclib.org, call us at 307.733.2164 or visit us at 125 Virginian Lane in Jackson.

Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming Presents Mrs. Eva Schloss

Historic Evening with Anne Frank’s Stepsister: Eva Schloss, Learning From the Past; Living the Present; Looking to the Future

On Thursday, August 28, 2014, the Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming will host what is sure to be an inspiring evening with Mrs. Eva Schloss as she tells her fascinating story. Mrs. Schloss is the step sister and childhood friend of Anne Frank. She is an enthusiastic advocate for helping society understand the meaning of an existance without prejudice or bigotry towards any human being. Governor Matt Mead is proclaiming August 28, 2014 Wyoming Tolerance Day. The lecture will be held at the Center For The Arts, located at 265 S. Cache Street, in Jackson and will begin at 7:00 p.m. A personal book signing will follow the lecture.

Eva Schloss Biography:

I was born in Vienna,Austria 1929. As one of many Jewish families, we were faced with persecution, but were lucky enough to be able to flee the country, first to Belgium and then in 1940 to Amsterdam, Holland, where we met the Frank family.

Following the German invasion of Holland in 1942 and the arrests of many Jews, our family had to go into hiding. In May 1944 we were betrayed, captured by the Nazis and sent to the death camp Auschwitz. In January 1945 my mother and I were liberated by the Russian army. We were evacuated eastward, travelling with the Russian army as far as Odessa. We had to wait until the war ended in May 1945 to be repatriated to Amsterdam. There we learnt of the tragic deaths of my father and 17 year old brother in Mauthausen. The loss of my family haunted me and made it difficult to lead a normal life again.

I had to resume my education and finished school at 18, and went on to study History of Art for a year at the University of Amsterdam. In 1951 I began training as a professional photographer in London, where I met Zvi Schloss. We were married a year later and made our home in London, during which time I was working in a commercial studio. In 1953 my mother married Otto Frank the widowed father of the diarist Anne Frank, making me her posthumous step sister.

Zvi and I had our first daughter in 1956, and we were blessed with two more over the years. From 1972-1997 I owned and ran an antiques business, in that time the girls had grown up and had children of their own, making us the proud grandparents of three girls and two boys.

Since 1986 I have become increasingly active in Holocaust education by speaking in schools, universities, prisons and public meetings. I co-founded the Anne Frank Educational Trust in the UK.

My first book, Eva’s Story, about my experiences during the war, was published in 1988. It has been translated into eight languages.

In 1995 I co-operated with U.S. playwright James Still in the creation of an educational play And Then They Came for Me, Remembering the World of Anne Frank, dealing with four teenagers in the Holocaust. The play is widely performed in England, U.S.A, Europe and Australia. I am attending many of those performances so I can answer questions after the shows. In connection with these educational activities, I received an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law from the University of Northumbria in 2001, and from the University of York in 2004 for Education.

In 2005 I wrote my second book, The Promise, aimed at younger readers, telling the story of my brother Heinz.

In 2008 the U. S. House of Representatives honoured me in the Congressional Record.

In 2012 I was awarded an MBE by Prince Charles for Holocaust Education.

In 2013 I published my third book, After Auschwitz, describing the impact of my experiences on my life and that of those around me.

LJD-2014-block (4) Pinedale Fine Arts June 28 2014

Pinedale’s Soundcheck Mini-Music Fest Returns Saturday, June 28

The Pinedale Fine Arts Council is proud to present the seventh annual Sound Check Mini-Music Festival on Saturday, June 28 at 5 p.m. at American Legion Park in Pinedale, WY. The event is free to attend so dust off that cooler, grab your camp chair and head to Pinedale for an evening of amazing music!

Headlining this year’s Soundcheck will be Portland, OR singer/songwriter Laura Gibson. Gibson currently records for the independent U.S. label Hush Records. In 2008, she toured the United States as the opening act for Colin Meloy of the Decemberists. Since the release of 2009’s Beasts of Season, which NPR called “nothing short of a masterpiece” and Mojo called “both quietly devastating and life-affirming”, Gibson has seen her career swell to include everything from modeling in a Japanese fashion magazine, to receiving a standing ovation from an auditorium full of prison inmates.

Playing the Soundcheck middle slot this year is Olympia, WA/Minneapolis, MN duo The Lowest Pair. The Lowest Pair is a quirky, old-time roots influenced duet, featuring the high lonesome harmonies of banjo pickin’ songsters Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee. They perform both traditional and original music, often nestling-in somewhere between. With their city folk front and back porch sentiment, this new, sweet, and powerful duo are turning heads across the country.

Opening the 7th annual Soundcheck will be Austin, TX duo Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay. Leigh and McKay craft story songs with equal measures heart and humor. “Before the World Was Made,” the Austin-based songwriters debut collaboration spotlights the celebrated troubadours in peak form via modern day country duets a la George Jones and Melba Montgomery but with very sophisticated songwriting.

Following this year’s Soundcheck will be an official after party at Rock Rabbit featuring Austin, TX trio Loves It! Born in Austin, Texas in 2010, Loves It is the duo comprised of songwriters of Vaughn Walters and Jenny Parrott that has already played hundreds of shows in the US, Europe and Asia in that short time. The harmony driven pair often switches between guitars, fiddle, and banjo, adding special guests to create a bigger sound, and playing with a veneration for tradition, and a determination to bring a modern voice to their favorite folk, country, gospel and punk sounds.

The annual Soundcheck Fest was first conceived 7 years ago by the Pinedale Fine Arts Council as a means of testing a new sound system they purchased with grant money from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund. The Town of Pinedale and the Sublette County Recreation Board helped support this event.

ART IN WYOMING: Plein Air Elk Refuge, The Culture Trip Visits Cheyenne, GTNP Art, Laramie Mural Project

Click the image at left for tickets, info, schedule & more for our Food & Photo Festival, May 30 & 31 in Laramie!

Plein Air Painters at Natl Elk Refuge Visitor Center May 13

A group of painters will use the backdrop of the National Elk Refuge as artistic inspiration on Tuesday, May 13, giving visitors an opportunity to watch and ask questions as the artists create their works.

The artists are part of the Teton Plein Air Painters, a group of artists who meet once a week from May – October in the Teton environs. Starting with two people during the summer of 2012, the group now has a communication list of over seventy. Typically, three to ten people are onsite to paint, referencing the landscape for motifs. Art mediums include oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pen and ink.

The group will spread out in the area of the visitor center, located at 532 N. Cache Street in Jackson. Weather permitting, likely locations will include the visitor center lawn, the covered upper deck of the facility, and the remote viewing deck across the lawn next to the wetlands area. Current visitor center hours are from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, but visitors are welcome to stroll through the grounds after hours to enjoy the art session.

En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is used to describe painting done in an outdoor setting. The artists paint natural light, using color to define form. Depending on the light and weather, plein air paintings are generally done in one session. Artists may add final touches to their work once back in the studio. For additional information on the Teton Plein Air Painters and Tuesday’s session, contact Bobbi Miller, Facilitator, at 307 / 543 2910.

International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race Kicks Off TONIGHT!

visit our website & find a WY vendor

We dare you to say the name 10 times fast – or even the acronym, IPSSSDR — I always get hung up on S #2. 🙂 This beyond awesome, annual event finds dog teams mushing across the western half of Wyoming, stopping in small towns along the way, and bringing together a whole lot of folks excited to see this wintry spectacle. The event kicks off TONIGHT, January 31, in Jackson (see event details below!) – and continues through February 8 with stops detailed below… Stay tuned to their website & Facebook page for pictures, details, updates & more!

Photos in this blog post taken from IPSSSDR Facebook page

The excitement of the 19th annual IPSSSDR will be unleashed tonight at the Town Square in downtown Jackson, Wyoming. It’s easy to find the starting line if you listen for the enthusiastic howls and excited barking of more than 300 sled dogs. And they are ready to run!! Prepare yourself for a full evening of events as this week shifts into high gear.
The first teams leave the starting chute at 6:30PM so come early to take advantage of the unique opportunities this race offers. You can meet and greet the mushers, see the lovely Rebecca Podio, Miss Wyoming 2013, watch video of previous races, and, on this cold night, enjoy some hot food and drink. You can even win prizes at the PEDIGREE® tent. Then pick out a choice spot to watch the teams as they race through the streets of Jackson on their way to the Snow King Resort. After you’ve seen the two and four footed athletes head down the block and out of sight, catch the free shuttle START BUS from Town Square to the Snow King Center. At the finish line you can congratulate the mushers and maybe even pet a dog or two, then watch the torch light parade as it snakes down the mountain (see photograph), the Jackson Hole Air Force participate. And if that isn’t enough, there will be dazzling fireworks, too.

The race continues for the next eight days, covering 330 miles with stops in Alpine, West Yellowstone, Lander, Pinedale, Big Piney/Marbleton, Kemmerer, and, crossing the final finish line February 8, in Evanston. Follow the race right here on Facebook or visit the official race website atwww.wyomingstagestop.org for exclusive coverage, photos, and current standings.
