This week we are featuring Riverstone Art of Cheyenne, WY

Diana Riverstone, Riverstone Art  Diana@riverstoneart.com   www.riverstoneart.com

Big Sky Trail

Diana has always loved art and creating beautiful things. She took art classes all though high school, winning awards for her serigraphs (silk screening process). Then careers happened and art got left behind.  Before retiring, Diana found an oil painting class through Cheyenne Parks and Recreation and got hooked on painting in her first class. Diana decided to take some art classes when she retired to see if she still had any talent. She switched to acrylics and water based mediums because they offer unlimited potential to create special effects in her work. Some very special paintings developed from simply wondering what else she could do with her materials and experimenting with them.

Diana creates original, realistic landscape paintings from wide plains panoramas to mountains, forests, deserts and caves. Her work comes in a variety of sizes and color palettes to suit any taste and decor. She also created a special Cave Series where the viewer feels as though they are standing in a cave looking outward.  Diana also paints on both sides of a piece of glass – the background on the back side and the foreground on the front.

Midnight Magic

The uniqueness of Diana’s work can include thin to very thick applications of pastes that create thick textures up to one inch above the canvas or “crack” in unique ways. She also use various paint mediums like sand, fibers, flakes and mica for interesting textures. These painting mediums create their own shadows for interesting and unusual effects. For subtle sparkle, sheen, and shifting color depending on your angle of view, Diana uses iridescent, metallic and interference paint and additives. Several paintings have won awards in various art shows. Prices depend on size and materials, and generally run from $75.00 to $500.00, plus appropriate taxes and shipping if needed.

Cougar Country

Custom orders are welcomed; Diana loves to talk with people about content and color preferences.  She can be contacted by email at Diana@riverstoneart.comor through her website at www.riverstoneart.com .

Diana’s work can be found in the gallery and gift shop at the Cheyenne Artists’ Guild off Morrie Avenue in Holiday Park, Cheyenne. She also has two pieces at Emerald Foam Control Products off Camp Stool in Cheyenne.  Diana would love to have her paintings for sale in additional stores and galleries. Her work can also be seen on her website: www.riverstoneart.com .

Desert Windows

Paintings selected:

  • Desert Windows ($350.00), very thick application of texture medium, acrylic paint, part of Cave Series
  • Silver and Gold ($200.00), painted on glass using acrylic, iridescence and metallic paints; texture is due to slightly thick paint layers
  • Cougar Country ($375.00), light application of texture medium to create the rocks and foreground, interference color shifts the highlights from silver to gold depending on the angle of viewing.
  • Big Sky Trail ($375.00), medium application of texture medium, iridescent and interference color used on highlights
  • Midnight Magic (375.00), Very thick application of various texture mediums, acrylic, metallic, iridescent and interference color used

This week we are featuring Cap-Lures of Casper, WY

Michael Walock, Cap-Lures  2400 W 39th   Casper, WY 82604   307-237-3915

cap-lures@bresnan.net     www.caplures.com

Michael Walock was born and raised in North Dakota where hunting, fishing, trapping, camping and outdoor recreation is the way of life. He began fishing at the age of two with his father and has continued for 57 years to date and plans to continue.  Back then fishing rods and reels, tackle and lures were not as modern as they are today. Michael and his father made several lures from wood or whatever they could find.  Fishing in Canada once, losing most of what little tackle he had, Michael made a spinner from a pop top can, which worked great. Many times they could not afford bait nor did they have nets to seine minnows, but they could always dig worms. Michael started to experiment with bottle caps in 1972 but could not get the cap to spin.

In 1979, Michael move to Casper, where his interests in fishing, hunting etc. became anew due to the state of Wyoming’s beauty, and the game and fish that abound here. He again started to work on the cap lure and in 2010 Michael perfected the lure while providing an outlet to recycle bottle caps. Michael’s wife and son assist in all aspects of this family oriented business, in which the Walock family takes great pride.

All the lures are functional and some people just collect them. The lures have caught many fish including the trout pictured on their web site. They can be used with live bait and at various depths with sinkers.  There is no other lure like them in the world.  The lures are original and patented; and there is the added bonus of recycling the caps.  Customers can also place custom orders.

Get in on the lure action by catching a display or signed, dated and framed collection series by retailing them in your store. Email Cap-Lures direct, visit their web site,  or visit one of these retailers.

Cap-Lures can be found at the retailers below:

This week we are featuring:  Dowd House Studios of Alpine, WY

Jenny & Sam Dowd  Dowd House Studios  PO Box 3831  Alpine, WY 83128    Near the Idaho/Wyoming Border off Hwy 89 south of Jackson

Phone:  307-413-4460

Email: jennydowd@gmail.com

Website:   www.dowdhousestudios.com

Jenny & Sam Dowd met as students at Kansas State University in the ceramics studio. They traded phone numbers written in pieces of clay.  They both have always been drawn to working with their hands, and each had experiences with clay as children, which stuck with them.  As they moved around the country they always set up some sort of studio, but Alpine, Wyoming is the first place the Dowd’s studio in their home feels permanent.

Dowd House Studios is known for their utilitarian pottery.  They like to make pottery that can be used every day but also for special occasions.  Sam carves or brushes animals onto his pieces which can be very whimsical and, of course, one of a kind. From the fish of the region to dinosaurs, birds and deep-sea fish, they strive to create a piece of art in each of their pots, hoping that the customer will enjoy the experience as much as the Dowds did making the pieces.

The Dowds welcome custom orders and commission of projects.  They enjoy projects that can be personalized for their customers.  Jenny and Sam work with a few Jackson hotels. They created water pitchers for the Wort Hotel and the Four Seasons in Teton Village, as examples.

You can find Dowd House Studio pieces in Jackson at the Wort Mercantile; in Alpine at the Mountain View Natural Market and the Raven Lunatic’s Art Gallery.  You can also visit their studio and the best way to contact them is by email.  Prices start at $12.  Other places to find the Dowd’s work is on a recently created Etsy site and on Facebook; links for both are on their website.

This week we are featuring Wyoming Pure Natural Beef, LLC from Wheatland, Wyoming

Cynthia Goertz  307-331-1176  info@wyomingpure.com  www.wyomingpure.com

Wyoming Pure Natural Beef started in 2004 as a means of diversifying their ag operation to keep the next generation involved in the ranch, Lazy V Six, Inc.  Everyone in the family has a job to do, whether it’s going to shows, home deliveries, packaging, or working the cattle.  The goal of the Goertz family and Wyoming Pure Natural Beef is to keep growing without losing customer service.

Wyoming Pure sells all cuts of their USDA inspected beef frozen and vacuum packed.  They offer a wide variety of steaks and roast as well as ground beef, beef jerky, snack sticks and summer sausage.  All of the products sold come from beef raised on their Lazy V Six ranch.  The beef is raised without hormones or antibiotics and naturally dry aged to add great flavor and tenderness.

Customers can order any of the Wyoming Pure Natural Beef packages (starting at $45) that are offered or they can customize their own package to suit their needs.  Beef may be purchased by half beef, quarter and simply a package of steaks.  Orders may be placed by calling 307-331-1176 or by going online to www.wyomingpure.com.   Gift certificates are also available.

Wyoming Pure Natural Beef offers free delivery to Cheyenne, Casper and Wheatland.  The holidays are fast approaching and Wyoming Pure Natural Beef has several special Holiday packages available. Backstory — For some time I have been searching for the right subject matter or body of work to submit to The Wyoming Arts Council for consideration. I have a full portfolio of wonderful landscapes showing off our fabulous state, not to mention portraits, wedding and commercial work. As I really started to think this through I decided to do something totally outside the box and get the public involved since they are my core business. I look at a lot of West Coast Commercial Photographers for inspiration as they are on the cutting edge of the industry. Joel Grimes is a primary inspiration. As I was looking through some of his work I saw a series of images he shot of some famous RAP musicians, the lighting scheme was most unique.  I quickly realized he must have made a modifier to create that harsh narrow strip of light on the subject. So I set out to do just that and Project “Edge” was born – kinda.

Fact — As a portrait photographer you have a short period of time to connect with your client and draw out some emotion and their personality in order to create a successful image.

Concept — Project Edge takes this a step further. I have designed a specific light modifier to create a very edgy light on the subject and using a very edgy editing style, to create a very Raw and Edgy image.

Most people come to a portrait session to look all pretty and put on the smile and project their exterior beauty.

I have set out upon the public to let them do the work in terms of bringing their personality to the surface in a 5 minute portrait session letting them be whoever they are without having to project merely their exterior beauty.

The final result in these images may not “Appear” beautiful to some so therefore as a viewer you must look deeper into the image to discover that beauty. Humans are unique both mentally and physically.

I think people from all walks of life truly just want to be themselves, yet get defined by their lifestyle, job, etc. This is an opportunity to get an image taken that reflects possibly who they really are or wanna be.

Results — 67 volunteer subjects shot in less than 3 weeks – 28 of which were men and 37 women. The success of this proves a couple things:  the very power of Social Media i.e. Facebook, as that was the primary tool used to drive the project; and the power of Art…people from all walks are affected by art and this shows the desire to be a part of a public art project.

Sheridan — Tawni Shuler Show at Sagebrush Community Art Center

The Sagebrush Community Art Center hosts “Unraveling,” an exhibition of artwork by Tawni Shuler, which opens September 22 at the Historic Depot on 201 E. 5th St in Sheridan.  An Artist’s Reception is scheduled for September 27th, from 5-7pm.  The show runs through October 27th.

Shuler’s her work is inspired by memories of growing up in Wyoming and experiencing the western landscape and its life cycles.  She works primarily with painting and drawing materials, in addition to mixed media, such as collected pieces of the landscape: bones, plants and dirt.  Her work has shown nationally, and Shuler recently participated in the Jentel Artist Residency Program in Banner.

Shuler states, “It is the experience in the details of a place that define it, make it unforgettable and almost magical.  I am inspired by memories of landscape: the life cycles of its inhabitants and plants, the drastic seasons, possessing qualities of both grittiness and frailty.”

Shuler is currently Visiting Artist at Sheridan College, where she teaches painting and drawing.

CHEYENNE:  Art, Design & Dine Celebrate American Craft Week — Click here to see the feature in our Fall 2012 issue of Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine!

In a world of high tech, instant and mass produced, the hand crafted takes us back to an appreciation of “the irregular and intimate quality of things made entirely by the human hand.” (Willa Cather) Every October, crafts events and artisans around the nation are highlighted during American Craft Week. Crafts supporters can access events across the nation at their website at americancraftweek.com.  Art tour organizer, originator, (and talented mixed media artist) Georgia Rowswell found out about the event last year and quickly scheduled a show for her gallery, Artful Hand Studio & Gallery in Cheyenne. “I paired Terry Kruezer with Curt Theobald, both gifted crafts people from the area. Wyoming had no representation on the American Craft Week website that year until my gallery signed up. This year will be different!” proclaims Rowswell.

Cheyenne’s Art Design & Dine will be celebrating along with the rest of the country during its regularly scheduled monthly art tour on October 11th from 5-8 pm. Tour venues are working together to provide a special evening that honors the talents of local and regional crafts people. Here is a sampling of what you can expect from female artisans during October’s art tour:

Fiber artist Christi Beckman’s show, Intersections, will be on display at Artful Hand Studio & Gallery.  Artist reception will be held during Art Design & Dine on Thursday, October 11 from 5-8 PM. Additional show hours on Friday, October 12 from 5-8 PM and Saturday October 13 from 10-3 PM. Christi will be demonstrating some of her techniques on October 12 from 6-8 PM. Artful Hand Studio & Gallery is located at 302 East 1st Ave Cheyenne WY .

The Nagle Warren Mansion (located at 222 East 17th Street in Cheyenne) will be featuring four crafts women:  dumpster glass by Beth Ruli; basketry by Linda Behrens; rosemaling by Diane Edwards and quilting by Cindy Paul. The show opens October 1, with an artists’ reception and rosemailing demonstration during Art Design & Dine on October 11 from 5-8. The show runs through October 27. The gallery is open during regular business hours. For further information call 307-637-3333.

In addition to these lovely women artisans, Steve Schrepferman’s ceramic sculptures will be on display at Clay Paper Scissors Gallery and Studio, located at 1506 Thomes Avenue in Cheyenne. Steve hails from Cody, Wyoming and will be on hand to talk about his work during the art tour on October 11 from 5-8 PM . The show continues until November 30. For more information and gallery hours call 307-631-6039.

Art Design & Dine is pleased to be a part of American Craft Week. “The creative sector is an important part of the vitality of any city and Cheyenne is no exception,” Georgia says. “This is a great opportunity to meet the creative forces behind the work and just enjoy a night of the arts.”
